Woolery ��,� � February 13, 2008 REQUEST TO ACCEPT WASHINGTON COUNTY HEALTH AND SAFETY GRANT The Public Safety DepartmenYs Emergency Management Division has been awarded $1,900.00 from the Washington County Department of Public Health. The funding is intended to promote awareness and preparation in the event of a public health emergency. If accepted, the funding would allow the purchase of educational materials, a tent and other items to be placed at the Cottaq�e Grove Strawberry Festival for the public's benefit from June 13'" through June 15 , 2008. Fire Chief Byerly has outlined in his memo further details regarding the grant process and the intended uses for the funds. J To: From: Date: Subject: COTTAGE GROVE Honorable Mayor and City Council City Administrator Ryan Schroeder Public Safety Director Craig Woolery Fire Chief Bob Byerly February 12, 2008 Washington County Health and Safety Grant BACKGROUND The Cottage Grove Public Safety Department was contacted by the 1Nashington County Department of Public Health and Environment regarding a grant for community mitigation strategies to protect the public's health and safety during and after emergencies. This particular grant is to assist community response and recover posed by pandemic influenza. Washington County is offering financiai support to local units of government in the county to assist in their public health emergency preparation efforts. The goals of this grant are to: 1 j Assist local units of government in community heaith emergency preparedness initiatives. 2) Increase community awareness and personai and family preparedness. The Emergency Management Division reviewed the grant and applied to the County for educational materials which will be handed out to the public during Strawberry Festival and Fire Department open houses. We also intend to work through an internal tabletop exercise with all department heads and City staff this spring. Breakdown of the grant request is: •$600.00: County supplied educational pens to be handed out to the public. s$100.00: Canopy rental for Strawberry Festival presentation booth. e$200.00: Food for City Council, Department heads and employees tabletop exercise. s$740.00: County supplied z fold information cards to be handed out to the public. •$200.00: County supplied pandemic flu "Be Prepared" brochures to be handed out to the pubiic. Internal requirements of our department: • Review pandemic infiuenza documents and Washington County Pandemic Influenza Operations plan-this was done while Continuity of Operations Plan was being researched. e Tabletop scenario exercise. . Identify current activities and resources that will be critical to maintain during a public health emergency- contained in Continuity of Operations Plan. • Discussion of a distribution plan of inedications to emp�oyees and families- this is part of the City All Hazard Plan and the City and High School are a distribution center for Washington County. RECOMMEIdDAT10N Staff recommend accepting the grant money fior $900.00 and $1,000.00 in educationai materials f�om Washington County.
