Stransky, City Clerk To: From: Date: Subject: City of Cottage Grove Public Safety Honorable Mayor and City Council, City Administrator Ryan Schroeder, Public Safety Director Craig Woolery Fire Chief Bob Byerly March 26, 2008 COTTAGE GROVE FIRE AUXILIARY DONATION Introduction During an OSHA consultative tour of Fire Department stations this winter, the consultant mentioned that our storing of spare fire hose on our second floor mezzanine was dangerous and should be discontinued. When fire hose is cleaned after a fire or driii, we hang the hose so it fully dries and then roll it up for storage. Cleaning hose and letting it dry prolongs its life. When dry, it is rolled up and then personnel carry hose up to the mezzanine. When trucks need to be reloaded with hose, personnel go to the second floor and carry hose downstairs to the bay floor. Hose packs weigh from 17 pounds for a roll of 1 3 /" to 100 pounds per 5"roll. Discussion The current wooden hose rack on the second floor mezzanine is falling apart. When researching new steel hose racks with wheels so the rack can be moved from truck to truck, we found pricing of manufactured steel hose racks for the size we wanted starting at $2,100.00. Fire Captain Randy Gerlach has designed a hose rack for which the parts (steel, wheels and paint) can be buiit for $900.00. His time to build it will be approximately 15 hours and this time will be out of fire payroll. Total cost will be less than $1,200.00. The Fire Auxiliary has stated they would donate the $900.00 for materiai purchases so we can build this rack. The hose rack will stay on the main garage floor at station 2 and will be able to be wheeled around to the trucks to save on carrying by personnei and eliminate carrying hose to the mezzanine. This will be more safe for our firefighters and convenient. As funds become available we wili repiace hose racks at other sfations with smalier racks. Action Requested Staff request permission to accept the Auxiliary donation of $900.00 which will be used to purchase the materials to build the hose rack. Fire Captain Gerlach will purchase the materials and be reimbursed by the Fire Auxiliary. The hose rack wili then be at station 2.
