Subject: DISPOSITION OF FIRE DEPARTMENT VHF RADIOS
INTRODUCTION
The 800 MHz radio system was implemented in February, 2009 by the Public Safety
Department and all vehicle radios, portable radios and Fire /EMS pagers were updated. The old
style VHF pagers for alerting our members and VHF radios are no longer in use. Our Motorola
radio representative has deleted our frequencies for these radios and they are ready for sale.
The department currently has 39 portable radios that we would like to sell either outright to
other departments or on E -Bay as the Police Department did earlier last year. The Police
Department has been averaging approximately $100.00 per radio and we hope to get the
same amount or more for our radios. We also have found in storage several old style radios
from many years ago that are not going to bring in any dollars and are to be destroyed only.
Fixed asset forms will be filled out and filed with our Accounting department.
DISCUSSION
Washington County was one of the last metro areas to switch to 800 MHz radios and there is
not much of a market for used VHF radios or pagers. Firefighter /Paramedic Mair will manage
the E -bay sales of these radios and has been working closely with Brenda Peper and Sgt.
Mike Coffey on this project to clear this outdated inventory.
ACTION REQUESTED
If Council agrees, pass a motion authorizing the disposition of 39 outdated VHF mobile and
portable radios and accessories and destroying 10 radios that have no value.
