There have been various renderings done to depict a monument style design for the new sign. In the process of reviewing design options, it was discovered that there are numerous utilities near the existing sign and in conflict with a larger monument feature. The relocation fees for construction of a monument sign would cause the construction to exceed the budgeted amount. The overall height of the monument sign would need to be higher than the renderings depict due to visibility issues with snow, trees and the vertical curve in the roadway. This would increase the cost of the sign beyond the existing budget to approximately $60,000. Staff has been working to find an economical and aesthetically pleasing alternative for the sign design. The enclosed rendering would utilize the existing steel columns and footings. The existing reader board would be removed and replaced with a new sign face listing the facility name, address and a three line LED reader board. The columns and new sign face material would wrap around the existing columns and would match the color of the ice arena's roof and accent color. The sign cap would be designed to replicate the existing wooden arched interior design of the ice arena, which was highlighted on the design of the entrance feature during renovation. The column base would be made of natural limestone to stay consistent with the City's park theme of limestone for entrance signs. Then around the base of the sign additional landscaping would be added to increase color and visual appeal. The landscaping will also fill the visual gap between the columns. It is proposed that the landscaping would be designed and installed by the City's landscape interns this summer. The proposed design with landscaping is estimated to be at the proposed budget amount. Schedule: March — Receive approval of design concept April — Receive quotes for the proposed sign May — Award contract for the sign and start construction June — Complete construction of the sign and begin installing landscaping Recommendation: It is recommended to approve a new ice arena sign design similar to the rendering presented, utilizing the existing steel columns with limestone column bases and an architectural feature that replicates the arched structure of the ice arena building. ■7; § ; ; 3 r >! ! -; _ ( TE } # oo / a a ©a ) a » « \ \ $ 2 - ZZ m ¢ ; L $% T ( / uj A w: ^ ® ~ \ - e $a \k 1/ \\ W CC . CD E l m , : . //
