ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION
FEBRUARY 15, 2005
Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of theAdvisory Committee on
Historic Preservation was duly held at City Hall 7516 – 80th Street South, Cottage Grove,
Minnesota, on the 15th day of February 2005.
Chair Beverly Gross called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
Burbank introduced Councilmember Bailey as the new council Liaison to the Committee.

Historic Playing Cards
The ACHP began work on identifying subject material for the historic playing card project. After
a productive discussion, the item was continued.
East Ravine Update
Burbank gave an update on the East Ravine planning Process. Ratzlaff reiterated her concern
about the realignment of Military Road. There was a general discussion about Military Road
and how the plan should take the roadway’s history into consideration in the final design.

NEW BUSINESS
2005 Meeting Schedule
Burbank submitted the 2005 meeting schedule. The schedule was accepted as presented.
Historic Preservation Fun Program Grant
Burbank indicated that time permitting, he would attempt to complete applications for the 2005
grant cycles from the State of Minnesota for the historic playing card project and the historic
plaque project. The ACHP concurred with the proposed action.
Atkinson Cemetery Research
Burbank discussed the documentation from the research and photography project of the
historic Atkinson Cemetery that was completed by E. Katie Holm. The ACHP held a general
discussion on the material.
Preservationists of the Year 2005
Burbank identified two potential candidates for the preservationists of the year. The first was
Dan and Patricia Hackl for their recent siding and roof work on 7405 Lamar Avenue, which is
the Historic Steen house. The second candidate was E. Katie Holm for her historic research
and photography of the Atkinson cemetery.
The ACHP discussed the possibility of presenting two awards in 2005 based on the
significance of the work completed by the two applicants. The item was continued pending a
quorum of the Committee.
Atkinson Cemetery
Burbank identified that the during a recent staff level discussion on ongoing Gateway North
redevelopment, the idea of replacing the Atkinson Cemetery fencing was raised. The proposal
was to install decorative ornamental fencing consistent with the District standards.
The ACHP held a general discussion on the item, and Brown suggested that the VFW may be
able to help financially and should be contacted.

Motion to adjourn was made by Ratzlaff and seconded by Brown. The motion passed
unanimously and the meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
