HomeMy WebLinkAboutHist Pres Minutes 07-08-2008CITY OF COTTAGE GROVE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION JULY 8, 2008 Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation was duly held at the Cottage Grove City Hall, 7516 – 80th Street South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota, on the 8th day of July, 2008. I.CALL TO ORDER Chair Japs called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. II. ROLL CALL : MEMBERS PRESENTBeverly Gross, Herb Japs, Jan Japs, Mickey McBride, Frances Ratzlaff, : MEMBERS ABSENT Glen Brown, Lorraine Brown, Judy Spooner (All excused due to agenda date misprint.) OTHERS PRESENT:Councilmember Myron Bailey John M. Burbank, Senior Planner Martha McBride III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Burbank recommended that roundabout signage be added as Item VII E. The ACHP concurred. Jan Japs moved to approve the agenda as amended, McBride seconded. Motion carried unanimously. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Jan Japs noted that the name Japs after Ratzlaff on paragraph two page three needed to be removed. Gross moved to approve the January 8, 2008, minutes as amended. McBride seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously. V.OPEN FORUM Burbank introduced the poem titled “Our City” as submitted by Leslie D. Wick. Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation Minutes July 8, 2008 Page 2 of 3 VI.OLD BUSINESS A. Oral History Project Burbank identified the draft ad for the oral history volunteer solicitation. The ACHP of- fered some wording changes. The group suggested coordinating with the South Wash- ington County Bulletin to have an article published. Bailey suggested placing the ad at local churches, the senior center and at Norris Square. The ACHP continued planning discussions on the project. Herb Japs asked some sample questions to Gross and Ratzlaff and suggested that Gross be interviewed first. Burbank responded that the addi- tional information would be researched and brought to the next meeting. B. Historic Cards Phase II Burbank presented details on the status of the Phase II historic card program planning. He indicated that he would be soliciting corporate sponsors for the Phase II cards. The ACHP discussed additional future card topics and areas of research for card material. Burbank responded that the additional information would be added to the base work, researched, and brought to the next meeting. C. Quist House: 9912 – 70th Street (“Cedarhurst Gardener’s Cottage”) Burbank presented additional information on the Thao family registration of their property on the local historic register. He indicated that they would be holding off on the registration at this time. The ACHP held a general discussion on this topic. Burbank indicated he would keep the ACHP updated on the registration process. VII.NEW BUSINESS A. Preservationist of the Year Burbank summarized the previous nomination discussions. After a general discussion Bailey suggested that Bev Gross receive the 2008 award based on her enthusiasm and contributions to Cottage Grove history. McBride moved that Bev Gross be nominated as 2008 Preservationist of the Year. Jan Japs seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously with Gross abstaining. B. 2009 Budget Burbank summarized the proposed 2009 budget for the ACHP activities. C. Bulletin Photos Burbank explained that the photo records that Judy Spooner offered to donate to the City were in negative format. The ACHP discussed the task of reviewing storage and access of the collection and determined that it was too big of a task for a group that meets six times a year. Burbank indicated that he would check into options for other donation out- lets and get back to the Committee. D. East Cottage Grove Fire Department Burbank indicated that he had a video of the East Cottage Grove History presentation that he had planned on showing, but considering the time, he would get it to anyone desiring to view it. Wright -Talk Notes IX.COUNCIL LIASON REPORT Councilmember Bailey highlighted the recent actions taken by the City Council and indi- cated that the ACHP would be involved in any future planning actions for the Langdon area. X.COMMISSION COMMENTS None XI.STAFF COMMENTS Burbank gave an update on the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee. He notified the ACHP that a television program about Old Minnesota will be broadcast on TPT 17 on November 18, at 6:00 p.m. Miscellaneous HP Publications/Information Burbank gave some background information regarding the miscellaneous HP publica- tions and information that were included with the packet. XII.ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn was made by McBride. Ratzlaff seconded. Motion passed unanimously and the meeting adjourned at 8:59 p.m.
