HomeMy WebLinkAboutHist Pres Minutes 10-01-2008CITY OF COTTAGE GROVE CITY COUNCIL AND ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION OCTOBER 1, 2008 Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a workshop meeting of the Cottage Grove City Council and the Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (ACHP) was duly held at the Cottage Grove City Hall, 7516 – 80th Street South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota, on the 1st day of October, 2008. I.ROLL CALL Council Members Present: Mayor Shiely, Councilmember Bailey, Councilmember Rice, Councilmember Luden, Councilmember Grossklaus ACHP Members Present: Herb Japs, Beverly Gross, Frances Ratzlaff, Judy Spooner Others Present: Ryan Schroeder, Howard Blin, Ron Hedberg, John Burbank, Ruth Voights II.INTRODUCTION Mayor Shiely called the workshop to order at 6:34 p.m. and welcomed the group. III.DISCUSSION Mayor Shiely asked the ACHP to e-mail her several historic facts about Cottage Grove for her November cable show. The following items were presented as discussion items to the group: 1. Preservation planning 2. Public education Tours o Cards o Oral History Project o Preservationist of the Year o Historic signage o Fund raising o 3. Facilitation of treatment/conservation 4. Historic property identification and documentation Joint Meeting CC & ACHP October 1, 2008 Page 2 of 2 5. Evaluation of property registration eligibility 6. Registration (City Register) Mayor Shiely asked the ACHP what Preservation planning meant. Japs explained that it was a big picture view on City History and a celebration of the accomplishments over the years. He stated further that the City history is about more than just historic buildings; it is also about people, events, and landscapes, and that historic planning highlights all facets. Mayor Shiely asked the ACHP if historic planning occurred during development. Burbank responded that the ACHP is involved in the planning process such as with the East Ravine Master Plan process. Japs noted the Military Road involvement. Spooner noted the significance of Military Road in the state. Mayor Shiely suggested a cable segment on Military Road. Japs noted that the ACHP program celebrates the evolving roots of Cottage Grove. Burbank explained potential tour ideas and noted that the historic cards had been dis- tributed to the school district. Spooner identified the need to recruit people for the oral history project. Japs suggested establishing a nominating committee to work on local historic registrations. Burbank explained certificates of appropriateness. The drive-in sign was discussed by the Group and was recommended that it should be on a Phase II playing card. Mayor Shiely asked the ACHP to do some research on Henry David Thoreau’s sup- posed trek through Cottage Grove in the 1800s. IV.ADJOURNMENT Being no additional comments, Mayor Shiely closed the meeting at 7:08 p.m.
