Fast Facts about Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH)
The mission of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing from the
Twin Cities and to make decent, affordable shelter for all people a matter of conscience.
Homeownership Program
• 818 local families have purchased TCHFH homes since its inception in 1985. Each year we build or
rehab an additional 50+ single - family, twin or multi -unit homes. Hundreds of families apply annually.
• Homeowner eligibility requires: an ability to pay Habitat's 0% interest mortgage, 300 -500 hours of
"sweat equity ", completion of homeownership classes, a willingness to partner with TCHFH.
• To be eligible a family's income must be below 50% of the area median income. The median
TCHFH family earns $35,500 /year. The average TCHFH home has 5 people living in it.
• A Neighborhood Family Partner helps each homebuyer with the transition to homeownership.
• TCHFH's foreclosure rate is under 1 % thanks to diligent work in selecting and preparing families.
• TCHFH is in the midst of the $36M "A World of Hope: It Starts at Home" campaign to respond to the
foreclosure crisis by building or rehabbing 730 homes and serving 5,200 local families by 2011
More than $16M dollars has already been raised towards the campaign goal.
• TCHFH is committed to rebuilding and revitalizing urban and suburban neighborhoods hit hardest
by foreclosure, with current efforts focused in North Minneapolis and St. Paul's East Side.
A Brush with Kindness Program (ABWK)
• ABWK provides free painting, landscaping and repairs to low- income homeowners struggling to
maintain their homes. Priority is given to elderly, disabled and single parent households.
• AWBK serves more than 120 local homeowners each year. More than 1,000 homeowners have
been helped since ABWK was started by TCHFH in 1998.
• The dramatic success of ABWK is now being replicated across American and worldwide. So far
more than 225 Habitat chapters have started ABWK -style programs.
Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program (MFPP)
• MFPP provides free counseling to homeowners to help avoid foreclosures. It is open to Minneapolis
residents and anyone who is a TCHFH homeowner.
• MFPP is the largest such program in Minneapolis. It will serve approximately 1,000 homeowners in
2010. Since the program began in 1993 it has helped more than 5,000 local homeowners.
• MFPP saved Minneapolis taxpayers $2.5M in prevented foreclosure costs in 2009.
