INTRODUCTION
The Cottage Grove Fire Department is asking permission to apply for a grant from CenterPoint
Energy that we were recently notified about. The grant opportunity is through their 2011
Community Partnership Grant Program and we have applied for and received other equipment
in the past .
The Cottage Grove Public Safety Department/Fire Division has our structural firefighting
bunker gear on an approximately 10 year replacement schedule. This protective gear protects
our firefighters from heat, flames and toxic gases containing cyanide and other poisonous
gases while battling conditions up to 800 degrees or higher. By OSHA and NFPA rules the
gear is washed and maintained on a continuous basis and as necessary sent to a professional
repair company when rips and tears can be fixed. This gear is used at all fires and training.
We have currently replaced 5 sets this year per our normal rotation of gear that was in need of
replacement. If we receive this grant we will be able to receive 2 extra sets this year and will
replace two 9 year old sets ready for replacement. This is a 50/50 match and each set will
cost approximately $1,863.00 with the city receiving $1,863.00 from CenterPoint Energy.
ACTION REQUESTED
Staff request permission that if we are awarded the CenterPoint Energy grant, to purchase 2
sets of protective fire gear.
