HomeMy WebLinkAboutHist Pres Minutes 03-10-2009�rlsroRIC r�aNnn��x CITY OF COTTAGE GROVE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION MARCH 10, 2009 Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the Advisory Committee on His- toric Preservation was duly held at the Cottage Grove City Hall, 7516 — 80th Street South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota, on the 10th day of March, 2009. I. CALL TO ORDER Chair Japs called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. II. ROLL CALL MEMBERS PRESENT: Beverly Gross, Glen Brown, Lorraine Brown, Herb Japs, Jan Japs, Frances Ratzlaff MEMBERS ABSENT: Judy Spooner OTHERS PRESENT. John M. Burbank, Senior Planner III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Burbank recommended that the topic "2009 Historic Photo Contest" be added as Item VII D. The ACHP concurred. Jan Japs motioned to approve the agenda as modified. Loraine Brown seconded the motion and the agenda was approved unanimously. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Burbank submitted the January 13, 2009 minutes for review. Glen Brown moved to ap- prove the minutes as submitted. Ratzlaff seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously. V. OPEN FORUM None. VI. OLD BUSINESS A. Historic Wooden Coins Burbank presented a draft design for novelty wooden historic coins that utilizes the ACHP logo and the words "FREE CITY PARK ADMISSION" to be printed on the back around a City Logo. The ACHP liked the design and added the words 2009 to Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation Minutes March 10, 2009 Page 2 of 3 the back design. The colors that were chosen were green on one side and blue on another. Gross produced examples of wooden coins she had collected over the years. Burbank responded that he would follow up on the coin production. B. Oral History Project Burbank identified the revised and categorized list of potential questions for the in- terviews and commented on his discussions with the cable commission staff. The ACHP held further discussion on the previous questions and added additional ones. Burbank stated that he would categorize the recent comments in a list and any addi- tional information would be brought to the next meeting. C. Historic Cards Phase II Burbank presented details on the status of the Phase II historic card program plan- ning. The ACHP discussed the new card cover. Burbank responded that the addi- tional information would be added to the base work, researched, and brought to the next meeting. D. Logo Modification Burbank identified that Hotline Design was still working on the logo modification, and that he would get the revision to the ACHP when it was completed. No further action. VII. NEW BUSINESS A. History in your Backyard Burbank reported that the Washington County Historical Society was hosting a His- tory in your Backyard event at the Historic Stillwater Courthouse on April 5 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. and encouraged the ACHP to attend. He noted that he would be selling cards there. No further action. B. Community Center Task Force Burbank reported that the City Council was establishing a Community Center Task Force to explore the feasibility of constructing a community center. He encouraged interested ACHP members to apply. No further action. C. Aggregate Industries Burbank updated the Committee on the Aggregate Industries Environmental Impact Statement, specifically as it related to historic preservation. The ACHP discussed the item and identified that they were comfortable with the recommendations of the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office and to keep them informed. Burbank responded that he would keep the ACHP updated. D. Historic Photo Contest Burbank suggested that the ACHP sponsor a Historic Photo contest that could be used for cards and other events and promotions. The ACHP concurred and identi- fied the following categories: • Buildings or structures in landscapes • Architectural details — interior or exterior Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation Minutes March 10, 2009 Page 3of3 • Vehicles or machinery • Cemeteries • Vintage The ACHP directed Burbank to proceed with establishing the event. No further action. VIII. HISTORIC INQUIRIES Burbank presented the ACHP with details on the historic inquiries received. No further action. IX. COUNCIL LIASON REPORT None X. COMMISSION COMMENTS None XI. STAFF COMMENTS Burbank presented Glen Brown with a plaque recognizing his 50 years of serving the City of Cottage Grove in different capacities. The ACHP congratulated him for such a unique accomplishment. Burbank gave some background information regarding the miscellaneous HP publica- tions and information that were included with the packet. XII. ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn was made by Glen Brown. Seconded by Gross. Motion passed unani- mously and the meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
