Cottage Grove, Minnesota, April 29, 2011: The Cottage Grove Police Department (CGPD) is offering citizens an exciting opportunity to develop an understanding and awareness of the CGPD's operational policies and procedures. Participants in the Citizen's Academy will experience a variety of topics — including lectures, demonstrations, ride - alongs, tours, and hands -on exercises — taught by police officers or experts in particular fields. The Academy is designed to create a safer community by building an understanding and partnership between Cottage Grove citizens and the CGPD. The Mission of the Academy is twofold: 1) to promote understanding of contemporary law enforcement issues and 2) to help citizens learn about and gain a better appreciation for the challenges and accomplishments of the CGPD. Class size is limited to 20 participants. Academy graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion from the City of Cottage Grove. GOALS: Enhance public safety, understand law enforcement strategies and problems, reduce crime and provide crime prevention strategies, build relationships with the citizens, and create police ambassadors to the community. COST: NONE! This free program offered by the CGPD includes a free polo "uniform" shirt to wear at each session. ELIGIBILITY: At least 21 years of age, Cottage Grove city resident or business owner, and must pass a background investigation check. (No law enforcement students please.)
