SUBJECT: Xcel Gas Main Renewal Project:
74 Street/Hyde Avenue /Ideal Avenue
DATE: 5/3/11
BACKGROUND:
During September and November of 2010, Xcel Energy completed leak repairs on a 4
inch gas main at both 7964 75 Street and7878 74 Street. Based on the close proximity
and timeframe of these repairs, Xcel conducted a background research to determine the
overall integrity of the pipe and whether other leak repairs could be expected.
Their research identified the pipe material as Aldyl -A, manufactured by DuPont
Company in 1971 and installed by Xcel in 1972.
While this pipe material is impervious to corrosion and will not break down, Xcel has
noticed that leaks can be created when rocks or other sharp objects impinge on the pipe
over long periods of time. Having experienced multiple leaks in a short period of time,
Xcel Energy plans on total pipe replacement to ensure the long term safe delivery of
natural gas to the community.
The proposed construction will take place in an area that has gone through significant
road rehabilitation, with the most recent proposed city project being the 2011 Street Seal
Coating that is scheduled to start on May 31 and be completed by July 1St
Xcel Energy proposes to start on June 13 and be completed on September 2nd (See
attached R/W Permit 02011 -19). Therefore, Pearson Brothers, Inc., the seal coat
contractor, has asked for an additional $7,500.00 for remobilization and delay to their
contract to finish seal coating the city streets affected by Xcel Energy gas main project.
To date this is the only known additional charge to the City Seal Coat Contract.
CONCLUSION:
Xcel Energy has asked to meet with the Public Works Commission to discuss /review this
proposed project.
