HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-10-13 MINUTES Human Services/Human Rights Commission City of Cottage Grove, Minnesota Meeting Minutes Wednesday, October 13, 2010 Members Present: Francisco Gonzalez, Vice-Chair Linda Lundstrom Rick Johnson Tanweer ‘TJ’ Janjua, Chair Laurie Steiger Members Absent: Doug Amos Mia Naseth-Phillips Jen Peterson Also Present: Kenneth L. Smith 1. Call to Order At 7:01 p.m., the meeting was called to order by Commission Vice-Chair Gonzalez. Commission Chair TJ arrived at 7:25. 2. Approval of Minutes Motion by Commissioner Laurie Steiger, Seconded by Commissioner Rick Johnson, to approve the minutes of the September 8, 2010 meeting, as presented. The Motion carried 4-0. 3. New Commission Member Applications – Youth Seat Commission Vice-Chair Gonzalez stated that he would like to nominate Brenna Masagi for the Youth Seat on the Commission. He described her as extremely wise and bright. He made the motion to seat her on the commission which was seconded by Rick Johnson. All present were in favor with no dissent. Ken Smith was instructed to put her name before the City Council for consideration. He said he would put her on the th October 20 agenda. Human Services/Human Rights Commission 2 Minutes of the October 13, 2010 Meeting 4 Survey on Accessibility There was a discussion about the survey and Laurie said she would hand out the survey before she left. Francisco asked if we should schedule a meeting at Norris Square. The Commission agreed they should have a meeting at the Senior Housing Center and instructed Ken Smith to set it up. 5. Family Homeless Commission Council Member Peterson was supposed to talk about this, but was absent. The item was tabled until the December meeting by Vice Chair Gonzalez. 6. 2010 Human Rights Day Conference Commission Vice-Chair Gonzalez stated that all of the Commission Members, as well th as Council Member Peterson are registered to attend the 27 Annual Human Rights Day Conference & Forum on Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Paul. The question came up about Brenna Masgai (new Youth Commission Member) attending the event. Laurie Steiger is calling her parents to see if she can go to the conference. 7. Diversity Highlight of the Month Francisco mentioned how grateful he was miners were being rescued in Chile. Linda Lundstrom talked about the 10 10 march designed to bring awareness about early childhood issues. She stated both Mayors from St. Paul and Minneapolis were on hand to speak. Laurie Steiger talked about a lap top at MNDOT that translate into other languages. Francisco mentioned the Army uses it too but it was not good for complicated conversations. 8. City Update Ken Smith provided an update on the following: a. Beyond the Yellow Ribbon b. Public Safety/City Hall Complex c. Monster Bash Parade d. Holiday Train e. Elections 9. Miscellaneous Correct spelling of Emerald Ash Borer in minutes. TJ asked when Laurie was leaving the commission. She replied in December. Adjournment Motion by Commissioner Laurie Steiger, seconded by Commissioner Johnson, to adjourn to meeting at 7:40 p.m. Motion Carried. 5-0. Presented by, Kenneth L.
