Subject:
Pinecliff Development Park Naming
The City is currently master planning for the neighborhood park to be located in the Pinecliff
housing development. As part of the master planning process, identifying a park name is
needed.
Background
In August, the Parks Commission completed step five of the city's Park Naming Policy. At this
step, the Commission was asked to debate the merits of a narrowed list of names (from the
original list of 19 in Appendix A) and provide a final recommendation to the City Council. The
name "Sunnyhill Park" was chosen based on the following supporting information:
Sunnyhill Park — This name is derived from a historic schoolhouse located in the park area
during the early 1900's. The name is also supported by the Advisory Committee on Historic
Preservation in Cottage Grove. Below is an excerpt from the Washington County Historical
Society's website with regards to the historical context of the school

- 1883 schoolhouse cost $1,000 to build
- In 1898 there were 26 students enrolled at this school
MEMORIES: - " John Dillinger created much excitement one day when he drove through the
school road with the police in chase almost running into a farmer driving four
horses abreast." - Woodbury: A Past to Remember
- "At one time the number of students was down to five and at another time
students had to share several desks for lack of room." - Woodbury: A Past to
Remember
- Students "tell of a teacher dismissing school so the students could watch an
airplane flying over and then returning to their classes when the airplane passed
out of sight." - Woodbury: A Past to Remember
During step six of the Park Naming Policy, the City Council is to review the Commission's
recommendation and either approve or deny the park name. Should the recommendation be
denied, the issue will be sent back to the Commission to start anew.
Recommendation
Consider the name "Sunnyhill Park" for the neighborhood park located in the Pine Glen
housing development.
