As part of the master planning process, identifying a park name is needed. Background In August, the Parks Commission completed step five of the city's Park Naming Policy. At this step, the Commission was asked to debate the merits of a narrowed list of names (from the original list of 19 in Appendix A) and provide a final recommendation to the City Council. The name "Sunnyhill Park" was chosen based on the following supporting information: Sunnyhill Park — This name is derived from a historic schoolhouse located in the park area during the early 1900's. The name is also supported by the Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation in Cottage Grove. Below is an excerpt from the Washington County Historical Society's website with regards to the historical context of the school DISTRICT 1855 FORMED YEARS SCHOOLS 1860, 1883 BUILT MODERN Located on military road and Sunny Hill ADDRESS DISTRICT Southwestern corner of Woodbury and northwestern portion of Cottage Grove BOUNDARIES DISPOSITION Burned in 1985 (some also say 1974), now a residence 1855: District established. NOTES 1855 -1860: The first school was in an old house on E. Ayers' land for 2 years. The next school was in a house on Mr. Hartley Mars' land for one year. 1860: Schoolhouse built. 1883: New schoolhouse built. 1940s: Electricity put in at the school. 1950: Consolidated with District 102. 1985 (1974 ?): Schoolhouse burned. - Was a typical country schoolhouse, according to the Stillwater Gazette. A white building with windows along the sides and 2 doors and a window in the entry at the front. - Was first called Union district. - Student enrollment: 1899: 26 students (ages 6 -15 yrs.). - 1883 schoolhouse cost $1,000 to build - In 1898 there were 26 students enrolled at this school MEMORIES: - " John Dillinger created much excitement one day when he drove through the school road with the police in chase almost running into a farmer driving four horses abreast." - Woodbury: A Past to Remember - "At one time the number of students was down to five and at another time students had to share several desks for lack of room." - Woodbury: A Past to Remember - Students "tell of a teacher dismissing school so the students could watch an airplane flying over and then returning to their classes when the airplane passed out of sight." - Woodbury: A Past to Remember During step six of the Park Naming Policy, the City Council is to review the Commission's recommendation and either approve or deny the park name. Should the recommendation be denied, the issue will be sent back to the Commission to start anew. [2 -Digit Year] - [Resolution Number] City of Cottage Grove Park Naming WHEREAS, the City of Cottage Grove will assume ownership of a neighborhood park located within the Pine Cliff housing development near 63 d Street and Ideal Avenue, WHEREAS, the City of Cottage Grove wishes to assess a name to this neighborhood park, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Cottage Grove, County of Washington, State of Minnesota, the official name of this park to be Sunnyhill Park Passed this 7th day of September, 2011.
