Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, May 8, 2002
Members Present: Kathleen Klein, Bruce Schmidt, Michael Watts, Grace Krmnm,
Kristin Haertl, Bart Fischer, and Jim Shinn

7:10 PM Call to Order
The Commission approved the minutes from the April l Oth meeting. Next, the
Commission discussed the letter that was sent to the Woodbury Math and Science
Academy on behalf of Bryan Klaes. The letter asked members of the school to come to
this meeting and discuss the situation. The members did not respond to the letter sent by
the Commission. Barb Klaes, Bryan's mother, updated Commission Member Grace
Krumm about Bryan's situation at the school. Grace Krumm informed the Commission
that Bryan's neurologist is unhappy about the decision not to allow the service dog in the
school. Barb Klaes mentioned moving Bryan back to Cottage Grove for the rest of his
high school education.
Commission Member Jim Shinn said she should speak to the School District about
services now before moving him to another District 833 School. Grace Kruuim said she
is not sure if a 3 Td party facilitator will be assigned to him next yeaz because his current
facilitator is leaving at the end of the school year. Jim Shinn said the IEP should be
changed to allow the dog to accompany Bryan in the schooL Michael Watts explained
that an ADA violation in this situation would be based on the impact and reasonableness
of the situation. Commission Members will be contacting the Minneapolis ACLU and the
Legal Rights Center in Minneapolis to get Bryan further help with his situation.
Kathy Klein made a motion to adjourn. Michael Watts seconded the motion. The
meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM.
Next meeting is 7:00 PM June 12, 2002
