1. Call to Order
At 7:05 PM the meeting was called to order.
2. Approval of Minutes
Jim Shinn made a motion to approve the minutes of the February and March 2006 meeting.
Regina Seabrook seconded the motion and the motion was approved unanimously.
3. Welcome guest Danisa Farley
The Commissioners introduced Yhemselves and the applicant Danisa Farley described her
background aud interests.
Jim Shinn made a motion to recommend the City Council appoint Danisa Farley to the Human
Rights and Human Services Commission. Cathy LaYtu seconded the moYion and the motion was
approved unanimously.
4. Diversity Hi�hlight of the Vionth
Chairman Moone provided a calendar of events in April including many religious and cultural
highlights. Apri16` is Ramanavami (Hindu) and is eelebrated as an epic of Aindu mythology
composed by Sage Valmiki and contains 24,000 verses in seven kandas. Ramanavami is
eeiebrated on the ninth day in the bright half of Chaitra and represents the birfh anniversary of
Rama.
5. City Update
Discussion ensued regarding the progress of the Fresbyterian Homes project.
6. Neighbors Connecting Neighbors Update
Cathy Lattu reported the NCNU segment on housing was very informative and the speaker was
impressive. The Commissioners who have seen the episode agreed. The Commission
coordinated the 2006 shows topics and designated the lead person as follows:
■ Christie Thompson has coardinated a segment on local cbaritable organizations for the
March show.
■ Councilmember Karla Bigham will coordinate the May program on domestic abuse.
• Regina Seabrook wi11 be coordinatin� the August updale on parent resources.
� Kathy K1ein (alumni Commissioner) will work on Yhe September show focused on
voting.
■ Rajean Moone plans to discuss Medicare for the November 2006 show.
This list of ideas for NCNU will continue to grow and be refined. The Commission members
agreed they want the programs to empower the viewer. Ideas brainstormed for future programs
include:
• Mental health (depression}
• Studentpanel(announce essay)
• Human services
• Drug/alcoholabuse
• Volunteerism
• Class-conscious
• African culture
. Pood shelf
• Victims Rights
7. Special Projects Update
Chairman Moone requested the Commission arrange to meet with the Police Department at the
May meeting. Topics of interest are a proactive plan for response to hale/bias crimes, opening
channels of eommunication, offering to provide diversity training for firsC responders, and to
have a question/answer session.
8. Commission Comments & Requests
Chairman Moone requested the Essay Contest be placed on the November 2006 agenda so
planning can begin early to spread the word.
7im Shinn requested Jessica Sandin research why there is no longer a post office dro�a off box (it
was loeated at Snyder's) for those residents that live on T1ie wesT side of Highway 61 and whether
one will be provided,
Chairman Moone nominated Cathy Lattu as Vice Chair of the Human Rights and I-Iuman
Services Commission. Jim Shinn seconded 2he motion and the motiou was approved
unauimously.
9. Adjourn
A motion was made and seconded to adjouru; the motion was approved unaniinously at 8:25 PM.
