Joint Meeting with the City Council at 6:30 PM — 7:00 PM.
Councilmember's: Mayor Sandy Shiely, Councilmember Myron Bailey, Councilmember Pat
Rice, Councilmember Karla Bigham
1. Call to Order
At 7:05 PM the meering was called to order.
2. Approval of Minutes
Cathy LatCu made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 2006 meeting. Jen Peterson
seconded the motion and the motion was approved unanimously.
3. Diversity Highlight of the Monfh
Chairman Moone provided the background information on the diversity highlight for the month
of July. The anniversary of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is in July.
4. City Update
Staff Liaison 7essica Sandin updated the Commission on the following:
■ Fo11ow-up from the Iast meeting: Bylaws distributed and Personnel Policy distsibuted.
� Consolidation of the City Dispa2ch Communieations Center to Washington Counry has
been completed and gone smoothly.
■ Progress of the Presbyterian Homes project.
■ The City's budget process has begun.
5. Neighbors Connecting Neighbors Update
Christie Thompson reported the NCNU segment on charities is now airing. The Commission
coordinated the 2006 shows topics and designated the lead person as follows:
� Regina Seabrook wiil be coordinating the July update on parent resources for childrell
with developmental disabilities, possibly focusing on autism.
• Danisa Farley and Jen Peterson will coordinate the September update on domestic abuse.
■ Rajean Moone plans to discuss Medicare for flie November 2006 show.
This list of ideas for NCNU will continue to grow and be refined. The Commission members
agreed they want the programs to empower the viewer. Ideas brainstormed for future programs
include:
• Mental health (depression)
• Druglalcohol abuse
• Volunteerism
• Class-conscious
• African culture
• Food sheif
• VicYims RighYs
7. Special Projects Update
Police Department Connections deferred.
Danisa Fazley and Jen Peterson expressed an interest in planning the Commissions invoivement
for next years Strawberry Fest.
8. Commiseion Comments & Requests
Commissioners discussed the joint meeting with the City Council and what the next step is for
the Service Animal policy. The Commissioners al1 agreed the policy issue is reaily a matter of
principle rather than a matfex of financiai hardship. The Commission a{;rees with the City
Council Yhat a field should be added to the licensing form in 2007 to track the number of service
dogs.
9. Adjourn
A motion was made and seconded to adjourn; the motion was approved unanimously at 7:30 PM.
