Call to Order Af 7:00 PM the meeting was called to order. 2. Approval of Minutes Jim Shinn made a motion to approve the minutes of the July 2006 meeting with one change. Councilmembers were at the joint meefing and not the monthly Human Services/Rights Commission meeting. Rajean Moone seconded the motion, All Present in Favor. 3. Welcome new staff liaison Joe Fischbach Members of fhe Commission gave Joe Fischbach a brief history of the Commission and everyone gave a brief history of themselves. It was also announced that there is a new Emergency Management Coordinator with the South Washington County Schools. The Commission would like to invite this person to a future meeting. 4. Diversity Highiight of the Month There is a new market square on the cornex of Lake and Chicago in Minneapolis. It features a variety of shops and restauraufs that highlight several different cultures. A portion of sale proceeds of Blizzards at Dairy Queen on August 10, 2006 will be donated to the Miracle Network. August is Child Support Enforcement Awareness month, in Minnesota alone there is $1.6 billion in unpaid child support payments. 5. Cit9 Update Staff Liaison Joe Fischbach updated the Commission on the following: • Progress of the Presbyterian Homes project. ■ Promotions of Brian Wilson and Pete Koerner to Police Captain and promotions of Randy McAlister and Mike Coffey to Police Ser�eant. Rajean Moone wiil iook into having a representative from the ?vIN Dept of Human Rights come to a future meeting to discuss Hate/Bias Crimes, definitions, Crime Victim Advocates and othex related topics. It was suggested to invite all City Commission members and the members of fhe City Council. 6. Neighbors Connecting Neighbors Update The Commission coordinated the 2006 shows topics and designated the lead person as follows: Regina Seabrook will be coordinating the July update on parent resources for children with developmental disabilities, possibly focusing on autism. Taping has occurred and should be airing within the neat month Danisa Fariey and Jen Peterson will coordinate the October update on domestic abuse. Rajean Moone plans to discuss Medicare and/or, possibly, Alzheimer's for the �lTOVember 2006 show. This list of ideas far NCNU wi11 continue to grow and be refined. The Commission members agreed thcy want the programs to empower the viewer. Ideas brainstormed for future programs include: • MenTai health (depression) • Druglalcohol abuse • Volunteerism • Class-conscious • �lfrican culture • Food shelf • Victims Rights Jim Shinn reported that 55 tllive is now on-line. He also reported that 50% of the proceeds from a recent pig roasY that involved 5 churches were donated to the food shel£ It was suggested to highlight The food shelf in a future NCNU segment. Danisa Farley reported that Crossroads Church will have Afriean Family Night on AugusC 23` 7. Special Projects UpdaYe Police Department Corulecrions defen•ed. Joe Fischbach wi111ook into have a police department representative at a fuYure meeting. 8. Commission Comments & Requests An inquiry was made into the budget request made by the Commission. Joe Fischbach will look into and report back at the next meeting. 9. Adjourn A motion was made Jen Peterson and seconded by Jim Shinn to adjomn fhe meeting at 7:40 PM; All Present in Favor.
