Call to Order At 7:05 PM the meeting was called to order. 2. Approval of Minutes Jun Shinn made a motion to approve thE minuCes of the October 2006 meeting. Cathy Hanson seconded the motion, All Presenti in Favor. 3. Facing Race Conversations recap Member of the Commission recapped the special meeting where the first part of the Facing Race program was viewed and discussed. The Commission would like to have a community-wide meeYing to watch the first portion sometime early next year. The Commission will watch Yhe second portion at the next regularly scheduled meeting in Deccmbcr. 4. Essay Contest Contest materiais have been sent out. At least one teacher has indicated she wants Commission members to come speak to her class. This will probably be done in January or February. The topic fox the year is Immigration. Christie Thompson will look for sponsors for the prizes. 5. 200� Goals The essay contest will be a goal again. The goal is to get more students to submit essays. Another goal is to continue to work on the hate/bias prevention plan. tlnother goal is to contirfually improve t1�e Nei�hbors Connecting Neighbars TV program. 6. Diversity Highlight of the Month November is National Family Caregiver monfh. 96% of care is given by family and friends. This care equates to �4.56 biil3on per year. 7. City Update A copy of the new ordinance with the service animal provision was inclufled in Commission members' packets. Kar1a Bigham has been elected to the MN f3ouse of Representatives and will vacate her Councsl seat effective December 29`". Council will be seeking applications from those interested in finishing out her term. The Cottage Square Mail has been demolished and work continues on the new Presbyterian Homes projecY. 8. Neighbors Connecting Neighbors Update A segment about Domestic Violence Awareness will be the next taping. 7en Peterson will eontact Doug at SWCCC to wark out a schedule for taping. 9. Commission Comments & Requests A question was asked, what is the Commission's purpose and mission? 'I`he Commission spenY some time discussing what has been accomplished and what areas time and energy c2m be focused. Joe Fischbach will check with the Bulletin to see if there are opportunities for Commission members to submit articles. 10.
