HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-10-16 MINUTESCity of Cottage Grove Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources Commission October 16, 2002 Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Commission was duly held at City Hall 7516 80 Street South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota, on the 16th day of October, 2002. A workshop was held with the Parks Commission and City Council at 6:00 p.m. regarding the renovation of Hamlet Park. Plans were reviewed and discussed. The Council made some recommendations and the issue will go back to the Commission for more discussion at the next meeting. The Commission will take into consideration Council's suggestions and recommendations. Acting Chair Eddy Wuorenma called the regular meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Allan Dubois, Eddy Wuorenma, Amanda Totino, Steve Morse (7:30 p.m.) MEMBERS ABSENT: AI Boche, Kathleen Kullman, OTHERS PRESENT: Associate Planner John Burbank Ice Arena/Recreation Manager Zachary Dockter APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was approved as submitted. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Wuorenma to approve the minutes of the September 9, 2002 meeting. Seconded by Totino. Minutes approved as mailed. NEW BUSINESS A. Resignation of Tammy Schwartz Tammy Schwartz addressed a letter to Steve Morse signifying her resignation. Burbank reviewed potential applicants. Those applicants will be invited to attend the next meeting pursuant to their interested in the Parks Commission. Parks Commission Minutes October 16, 2002 B. Oakwood Park Update Oakwood Park is still on schedule for construction in late October and /or early November. Dockter stated that the playground structure will have to be removed and our staff will not be able to transport it within our park system due to liability issues. The City will attempt to donate it to an organization within the community. Also, there are trees being moved by public works from Oakwood Park to other parks such as Arbor Meadows and Hidden Valley. There are also trees being moved from Mike Rygh's project to Hidden Valley Park and the Industrial Park at the intersection of the Flume and Jamaica Avenue. _OLD BUSINESS A. Kingston Field Lighting Discussion — Continued There still has not been any information from CGAA Soccer as to whether they're interested in making the purchase of those lights. We will wait for further information from the Athletic Association. B. Lamar Fields Master Planning - Continued Burbank submitted draft two of the Lamar Park Master Planning. He made the appropriate changes to draft #1 as recommended by the Commission in September. It was decided that more discussion would be needed involving CGAA as far as what their near future needs are regarding sports facilities. Also, it should also be taken into consideration as to whether this would be a good area for a community center. Burbank will update the Master Plan once again for another review at the November meeting. C. Field Renaming Policy - Continued Dockter submitted a memo on this issue outlining the second draft of a field naming /renaming policy for the City of Cottage Grove. The Commission reviewed the memo along with data from other cities and no recommendations were made at this time. The Commission will review it once more at the November meeting and make final recommendations there. At the December meeting, the final draft will be reviewed and sent to City Council for adoption. D. Community Center — Direction Recap Burbank stated that as per the direction from Council at their joint meeting, the Commission will continue to pursue a needs assessment for a Community Center. So, the Commission once again reviewed the survey that was sent out this past winter. Burbank also reviewed the timeline to point out where we are and where we should be. The question came up as Parks Commission Minutes October 16, 2002 to where the community center should be or could be.
