HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-11-13 MINUTESPUBLIC SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE COMMISSION MINUTES OF MEETING November 13, 200� Pursuant to due notice, a meeting of the Public Safety, Health and Welfare Commission was held at the City Hall Council Chambers and was telecast on local Government Cable Channel 12. CALL TO ORDER: The November 13"', 2001 meeting of the Cottage Grove Public Safety, Health and VVelfare Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Strom, Richard Lyden, Bruce Gengnagel, Bill Schmidt, Kyle Lindquist, Mark Leier, Mark Rudek, Trent Lyden STAFF PRESENT: Captain Craig Woolery, Council Liaison Pat Rice Approval of minutes: Chairperson Strom presented the October 9, 2001 minutes of the Public Safety, Health and Welfare Commission for approval. The minutes need to be amended to reflect that Bill Schmidt was NOT present at the meeting. On a motion by Mark Rudek, seconded by Mark Leier, the October 9, 2001 minutes were accepted as amended by the Commission. Motion carried. Approval of aqenda: Chairperson Strom presented the November 13, 2001 agenda of the Public Safety, Health and Welfare Commission for review. On a motion by Rich Lyden, seconded by Bruce Gengnagel, the November 13, 2001 agenda was accepted by the Commission. Motion carried. OPEN FORUM Chairperson Don Strom invited citizens present to address the Commission regarding any matters that were not on the approved agenda. There being no presentations from the audience, Chairperson Strom closed the Open Forum segment of the meeting. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT The Commission was provided a copy of the Pianning Commission's agenda for the November 26` 2001 meeting. Page 2 PSHWC Meeting Minutes November 13. 2001 There being no discussion regarding the Planning Commission's agenda, this portion of the meeting was closed. OLD BUSINESS Case 01-08-03 Request for a stop sign on 72n Street and Hidden Valley Lane The Commission again reviewed the report from the COP Team that recommended no installation of a stop sign is warranted, per the results of a traffic count and speed study. After general discussion, on a motion by Bruce Gengnagel, seconded by Mark Leier, ihe request to piace a stop sign at the location was recommended. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS Case 01-1 1-01 Fence at "T" intersection of Jamaica Ave. and 100`" Street Commission member Lindquist informed the Commission that the recommended signage of a barricade-type sign has already been placed at the location. Commission members would not need to take any further action on this request. Case 01-1 1-02 Request for School Crossing sign - 95`" and Hadley Ave. Commission members reviewed the location and it was agreed thai the sign should be placed per the recommendation of the COP team review. After general discussion, on a motion by Mark Leier, seconded by Mark Rudek, the Commission recommended to place School Crossing signage on 95`" Street at 7067 95`" St. for westbound 95`" and on Hadley Avenue for southbound traffic, across from 9454 Hadiey Ave. Motion carried. RESPONSE TO PREVIOUSLY RAISED COMMISSION COMMENTS AND REQUESTS None at this time. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND REQUESTS Commission member Mark Leier advised the Commission of a potentially hazardous activity of a paper carrier in the area west of Hadley Avenue and 65`" Street, during the early morning hours, around 0440 -0450 hours. He drives from the eastbound lane of traffic crossing to the westbound lane of traffic to make paper deliveries. Captain Woolery will assign an office to monitor the activity and make contact. Page 3 PSHWC Minutes November 13, 2001 Commission member Leier also inquired about sending something to the property owners in the area of Welis Fargo Bank. He went on to state that there is a potentially hazardous driving condition where traffic meets at uncontrolled intersections in this area and is concerned that that might be an accident. On a motion by Mark Leier, seconded by Trent Lyden, to have the property owners review the request to place a stop sign at some locations near the Wells Fargo bank. Motion carried. Captain Woolery will send a letter and provide information at the next meeting. STAFF REPORTS POLICE - Captain Woolery advised the Commission that the city has appointed him as a Captain, Steve McCarthy was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and there are two openings for police officers. The City will be pursuing to fill these vacancies as soon as possible. FIRE - The City is in the process of accepting applications for the hiring a Fire Chief/Deputy Director of Public Safety. COUNCIL- Working with Woodbury on a Task Force to work on Intemet Crimes against Children. ADJOURN Motion by Kyle Lindquist, seconded by Mark Rudek to adjourn the meeting at 7:23 p.m. Motion carried.
