Volunteers to work on historic Town Hall this spring
by Robert Vogel
City Historic Preservation
Officer
Last fall, the historic
Cottage Grove Town Hall in
Langdon celebrated its 120th
birthday in style, thanks to the
efforts of City workers and
volunteers. Gone are the rust -
streaked, graffiti - scarred metal
door, splintered trim, and gray,
weathered siding. Thanks to a
generous cash contribution
from City Council member
Cheryl Kohis, workers installed
a new four -panel wooden door
and millwork, and new cedar
boards replaced the broken
pine corner boards, work that
was performed entirely by
volunteers under the direction
of Bob LaBrosse, the City's
Building Official.
Later, a Public Works
Department crew stripped
what remained of the old paint
and applied a fresh coat of oil -
based paint and primer to the
exterior siding. With its
almost -new wood shingle roof,
installed in the late 1980s,
cleaned -up carpentry and new
paint job, rehabilitation of the
1881 building exterior is now
90 percent complete, with only
shutter restoration and some
foundation work remaining.
Interior Plans
The interior is another
story. Last summer, a dozen
volunteers worked for two days
to demolish the old athletic
association office and remove
all of the non - historic fixtures
from the hall, which also
received its first thorough
cleaning in more than 30
years. In addition to the
shutters, the six double -hung
windows still need to be
restored to working order, a
project that is being overseen
by Gary Golusky, the chair of
the Advisory Committee on
Historic Preservation. He has
already refurbished one sash
and expects to start on the
remaining 11 this spring.
Spring Projects
Starting this spring, the
City hopes to hold a series of
volunteer workdays at the
1881 Town Hall. Tasks we
hope to accomplish include
scraping, painting, and
installing new hardware on the
shutters; repairing interior
millwork; scraping, patching,
and painting sections of the
interior walls and ceiling;
building outdoor planter boxes
and flower beds; and restoring
the circa -1900 fireproof safe.
The goal is to have the
building fully restored to active
public use as a meeting room
and exhibit space by the
summer of 2003.

'Great Grove Get - Together' seeks participants
Planning is underway for
the annual Great Grove Get -
Together, to be held this year
on the weekend of June 7 -9.
The festival committee is
now seeking local organiza-
tions and businesses that
would like to be involved in the
festival by participating in
activities or sponsoring or
selling buttons. Anyone
interested is urged to contact
the committee soon.
"By marching in the
parade, running a children's
game, or working a concession
stand, you can advertise or
raise money for your group,"
said festival chair Barb Stoffel.
Great Grove Get- Together
buttons can be a fundraising
or promotional opportunity,
she said. Businesses wishing
to offer specials or discounts to
GGGT button wearers can call
the committee at the number
below.
The committee also wants
to hear from organizations that
wish to sell the buttons as a
fundraiser. Groups will earn $1
for each $2 button they sell.

Sponsors needed to produce
more Heritage Education materials
The Historic Preservation Division in the City's Department of
Community Development is hoping to team up with business and
community organizations in developing classroom resource materials
as part of its ongoing Heritage Education Partnership.
Since 1977, the City's Historic Preservation Program has
developed and distributed grade level 6 -12 and adult education
materials that promote understanding of Cottage Grove history.
Most of the educational materials take the form of one or two -
page "Heritage Site Files" and "Heritage Essays" designed as
classroom handouts focusing on locally important historic places and
themes.
The Historic Preservation Division has distributed more than 100
sets of the original kits, "Cottage Grove History in Buildings and
Sites," to teachers, Scouting leaders, and home schoolers. Each kit
includes an eight -page history of Cottage Grove and 12 handouts.
Sponsors are being sought for new Heritage Education materials
in the following areas: Agriculture in Cottage Grove; Local Military
History (Civil War to WWII); Women's History; Environmental History;
Business History (mining, manufacturing, home construction); Native
Americans; Archeology.
The Heritage Education program is administered by Robert Vogel,
the City Iistoric Preservation Officer, who leads a team of specialists
who prepare and assemble the classroom kit materials.
Much of the information contained in the kits is based on the
results of historical, architectural, and archeological research
sponsored by the City over the past 20 years as part of its municipal
heritage preservation program.
Production costs for classroom kit items range from about $500
to $1,200 and the program is financed entirely with grants and
donations.
For more information about the Heritage Education Partnership,
or to make a cash contribution to the Heritage Education Fund,
contact City Historic Preservation Officer Robert Vogel at 651 -604-
0175, or revogelgearthlink.net.

To protect the City's water supply, all Cottage Grove water mains will be flushed beginning the week of
April 1, 2002, and continuing through the week of April 22.
Dates for each area of the City will be:
Zone It Week of April 1
Zone 2 Week of April S
Zone 3 Week of April 15
Zone 4 Week of April 22
Public Works Dept. employees flush the water mains
twice a year by opening each of the approximately 1,000
fire hydrants in Cottage Grove. The sudden rush of water
loosens and removes accumulated mineral deposits from
the lines.
This process often causes discoloration of water in the
home. The water is safe to drink, but it could stain fabrics
if you are washing clothes at, the time the water mains are
being flushed. Be sure to check for signs of
discoloration in your water before starting a load of
clothes.
The Public Works Department also suggests that you
flUSIA out the taps in your home this spring, since iron
deposits tend to build up in residential lines. When
weather permits and all the hydrants have been flushed in
your neighborhood, open the outside faucets and run all
the cold water taps in your home at full force. The water will start out clear, then become discolored. Leave
the taps open until the water runs clear again, usually in 10 to 30 minutes.
If you have any questions, please call the Public Works Department at 458 -2808.
Congratulations! 86% of us recycle
The City of Cottage Grove has a weekly curbside recycling
program in conjunction with trash pickup. Your recyclable items
must be separated and placed in a blue or green recycling bin,
available from the City when you move in.
More than 86% of Cottage Grove residents participated in the
City's curbside recycling program last year, according to the Public
Works Department.
Some 9,260 households took advantage of curbside recycling in
2001. During the year they recycled:
2,312 tons of paper
135 tons of metal and cans;
458 tons of glass;
146 tons of plastic.
Check with your trash hauler for
specifics on what you can recycle and
how to separate it in the bins for pickup.
Remember: do not set polystyrene items at the curbside. They
may be dropped off at Cub Foods, 8690 E. Pt. Douglas Road.
