HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987 SummerThe Public Works Department has received several inquiries concerning the use of fire hydrants for filling swimming pools. Unfortunately for pool owners, all requests to use fire hydrants must be denied. There are several reasons to deny such requests: 1 .. sp o; Boulevard trees are entrusted to your care and enhance your property value. The Public Works Department asks residents to continue watering and caring for them. New trees planted last fall and this spring will need your attention this summer. The City Forrester is available to answer any questions concerning trees. Call 458 -2808. Persons who have street lights located on their side of the street are asked to call the Public Works Department, 458 -2808, before putting anything in the ground that could sever or damage wires (mailboxes, signs, 1. Only licensed Waterworks Opera- tors may perform work on public water systems. 2. There is no way to measure (and bill) the water used. 3. Cross - connections between public water systems and private systems are strictly prohibited. 4. The cost of two workers, a vehicle and equipment would exceed $200 per pool. 5. Rusty or brown water may result. Zam boni... 1, At A Several skaters recently became ill following an incident at the Coon Rapids Ice Arena. It has been alleged that the exhaust gas from the Zamboni ice resurfacer caused their illness. At the Cottage Grove Ice Arena, the air quality in the building is taken very seriously. The Zamboni engine is properly tuned and maintained and exhaust fans are run periodically providing a fresh air supply for the building. Weekly tests of gasses in the air are taken as required by the State Health Department. Our arena has never experienced a problem in this area, but the people of Cottage Grove can be assured that the staff of their ice arena is aware that such a problem could occur and they are doing everything possible to avoid such an occurance. Their cooperation is extremely beneficial to the Fire Department because of the number of grass fires that happen in the Spring and Fall. Your Fire Department requests that everyone take care in using matches or other combustibles. Children should be cautioned against rockets and model airplanes or cars using flammable liquid materials in their operation. These items, normally safe to operate, should be operated away from grassy areas, because heat and fuel can ignite dry grass. Areas exceptionally vulner- able to grass fires are parklands around the City. The careless use of fire could result in a court appearance and a fine! Fires are not allowed without a burning permit. Recreational fires are allowed if: 1. Fire is no more than three 13) feet in diameter. 2. No trash leaves, etc. are burned. 3. Adequate means of extinguishing fire must be at hand. 4. Fire is as far away from buildings as possible. 5. An adult must be in attendance at all times. Police may come out to check. 6. Call the Dispatcher at 458 -2811 and inform him /her that you are planning a recreational fire at your address so the Fire Depart- ment will not be called out when someone sees smoke or fire. No burning permit is required for a recreational fire as outlined above. Any questions? Call 458 -2809 during office hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. • still Needed We are still in need of volunteer firefighters that are available during daytime hours and would like any interested persons to contact Fire Station #2 at 458 -2809 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. "Building nspection Yours for •i With the coming of summer, we turn our thoughts to projects around the house. There might be fences to build, storage buildings to construct or additions to your house or garage to be considered. The Inspection Depart- ment would like you to know that most projects of this nature require a building permit. Building permits allow us to review your project assuring all local and State requirements are met. This permit furnishes you with access to on -site inspections as your work progresses and helpful suggestions for the accomplishment of your goal while meeting required regulations. Please call the Building Inspection Department at 458 -2826 if you need assistance or to determine whether your project requires a building permit. Everett A. Anderson Building Inspector 1; During the warm summer months, many residents have boats, trailers and RV's in their yards. Every year City Hall receives questions about where these peices of equipment can be parked. The City permits parking of recreation- al vehicles, including boats, anywhere on residential property. However, parking inoperative and /or unlicensed vehicles is prohibited unless the vehicle is screened from view. With the early arrival of the warm weather, many residents began their "spring cleaning" ahead of schedule. City ordinances are very specific on which items can be stored outdoors. For instance, neatly stacked firewood, lawn furniture and garden equipment can be kept outside. Items such as oil barrels, building materials (not being used on- site), tires, mattresses and old appliances are not allowed. If you have any questions con- cerning exterior storage, contact the Planning Department at 458 -2800. 3825 LAKE ELMO AVENUE NORTH • LAKE ELMO. This water flows in mains ranging from 2 to 36 in. in diameter and totaling approximately eighty miles in length. Chlorine and flouride is added to the water following State Board of Health guidelines and the water is tested weekly. Fifteen samples a month are tested by a private lab. Even though this year is the driest in ten years, Cottage Grove will do its utmost to assure adequate water supplies. This can only be achieved if everyone observes the watering sched- ule established by city ordinance. If your address ends in an even number, you may water only on even calendar days and odd numbered addresses on odd days. This ordinance will be enforced! Your lawn and garden benefit more from less frequent deep watering on a regular schedule that more frequent shallow sprinkling. jr y l Wr" @, } ^ k 'Spy` `y+ .n p 2 IMM.-siMMUMMIUM "o"o Peal ge Gtove The Cottage Grove Ice Arena will open for the summer skating season on June 15.
