Ice Resurfacer
On Saturday January 14 the Cottage Grove Ice Arena was privileged to host the Suburban
East Conference Hockey Day. In attendance we had 10 schools represented. They were Park,
East Ridge, Woodbury, Cretin Derham Hall, Roseville, White Bear Lake, Hastings, Mounds
View, Stillwater, and Forest Lake. In total in that single day the Arena hosted five varsity and
two junior varsity contests. We had over 1,200 people attend throughout the day. Total ticket
sales were $5560 with concession sales at $2,600. We are also pleased to report that the
event included a Cancer fundraiser which netted over $10,000 in donations.
At 7:30pm between the 1 st and 2" period of the Park vs. Woodbury game, the ice resurfacer
taking care of the North rink, would not start due to an overheated solenoid. Our Maintenance
Technician who was on hand that day for any maintenance issues, started to diagnose the
problem instantly. After it was determined that the resurfacer would not start, staff took action
and got the backup resurfacer ready and resurfaced the ice. After diagnosing the resurfacer
that broke down and testing the battery, it was determined that the starter broke down. Our
Maintenance Technician replaced the starter, which had a lifetime warranty, with a new one for
no additional charge.
It is quite common for us to experience mechanical issues with the resurfacer fleet which is
why we ensure that maintenance staff is on hand during significant events such as the
Conference event on January 14. Most issues are resolved in a manner not often noticed by
event attendees. This particular situation did create a ten minute time delay in the game.
Our current fleet includes the following propane fueled machines:
1. 2008 Zamboni
2. 1997 Olympia
3. 1984 Zamboni
This week we take delivery of a 2012 Zamboni.
This was a great event and we were pleased to be able to bring it to Cottage Grove.
