HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-02-13 PACKET 15.A.City of Cotta Grove Minnesota To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission From: Zac Dockter, Parks and Recreation Director CC: Date: January 18, 2012 Subject: Parks Commission Work Plan Introduction At the January meeting, commissioners held a workshop to discuss formulating a work plan for the coming year. A list of ideas for the work plan was generated by the group and will be reviewed in subsequent meetings to provide direction for the commission moving forward. Background The list of suggestions from the commissioners is as follows: 1. Emphasize access to the Mississippi River. 2. Pursue development of River Oaks Scenic Overlook a. Short term — trail connection (paved or non -paved surface) b. Long term — full development with parking, natural resource improvements, etc. 3. Monitor splash pad usage closely and report timely so results can aid in future decision making for additional aquatic facilities. 4. Continue working towards making Cottage Grove a bicycle friendly community. 5. Work to provide an indoor fitness facility in Cottage Grove. Public or private. 6. Continued expansion and marketing of trail system. 7. Continued development of dog park — seek potable water. 8. Work to promote walking and /or trail clubs. 9. Incorporate fitness and educational interpretive signage along trails (mileage, calories burned, etc.). 10. Development of Hamlet Park — including lit ballfields. 11. Connectivity in the community for both vehicle and non - motorized recreational use. 12. Long term, unique attractions to the community to make Cottage Grove a destination point — examples include zoo, interactive farm, etc. 13. Pursue implementation of an Art Center — public /private partnerships 14. Work with MN DOT to provide overpass connecting E. Pt Douglas Rd (near McDonald's) to Hamlet Park in its master plans for Highway 61. This list can certainly be added to or edited based on feedback at the next workshop. Recommendation Review the list of suggestions and provide feedback to staff for narrowing scope of suggestions to approximately three to five short and long term goals of the commission.
