HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-03-12 PACKET 07.F.City of Cotta Grove Minnesota To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission From: Zac Dockter, Parks and Recreation Director CC: Date: February 14, 2012 Subject: Parks Commission 2012/2013 Work Plan Introduction At the past two meetings, Park Commissioners held workshops to discuss formulating a work plan for the coming year. A large list of ideas for the work plan was generated in January. In February, Commissioners narrowed the list to provide focus on key elements of the work plan. Background The suggested 2012/2013 work plan for the Parks Commission is as follows: 1. Study and emphasize creating access to the Mississippi River. a. River Oaks Scenic Overlook b. Gateway North Open Space development c. Grey Cloud island areas 2. Study and emphasize creation of additional aquatic recreational facilities. a. Monitor splash pad usage and use results to study additional options b. Work with community center task force and city council to continue pursuit of larger - scale aquatic facilities as part of a community center or its own operation 3. Study, develop and master plan recreational trail opportunities and program a. Continue working towards making Cottage Grove a bicycle friendly community. b. Focus on marketing of the trail system (mapping, trail clubs, adopt -a- trail, etc.). c. Seek continued expansion of the trail system to assure connectivity throughout community. d. Incorporate fitness and educational interpretive signage along trails (mileage, calories burned, walking benefits, etc.) 4. Aggressively pursue Hamlet Park development a. Study project status /needs, then work cooperatively with city council to find a means to complete the project. 5. Connectivity in the community for both vehicle and non - motorized recreational use. 6. Long term, unique attractions to the community to make Cottage Grove a destination point — examples include zoo, interactive farm, splash pad, GNOS, etc. Recommendation Place on file the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission 2012/2013 Work Plan.
