The process will be opening approximately june 4, 2012 and generally awardees hear if they will be receiving the grant within 6 -12 months. DISCUSSION. The Fire Command Staff has decided to request via the 2011 AFG GRANT process, funds to purchase replacement self- contained breathing apparatus to replace our current 12 year old equipment. Life expectancy for our current SCBA's is 15 years. SCBA allow firefighters to enter hazardous environments to perform essential interior operations including offensive fire attack, victim search, rescue and removal, ventilation and overhaul. They are also used at non -fire incidents involving hazardous materials and confined spaces where there is a threat of toxic fumes or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. ACTION REQUESTED Staff request permission to apply for the 2012 Assistance for Firefighters Grant for the purchase of replacement SCBA's. The grant is a 90/10 matching grant with the FEMA grant of $255,600.00 and the City portion of $28,400.00 for a total purchase price of $284,000.00.
