(= Memo To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission From: Molly Pietruszewski Date: August 8, 2012 Re: Recreation Division Update Below is an overview of completed and current Recreation activities that staff is working on. Past Projects /Programs • June 8 was our summer staff (12) and volunteer (23) training held at the Ice Arena — these people work at our Supervised Playground Programs, Woodlands Rec Center, teach Tennis, and Pre - school Programs at Pinetree Valley. • Strawberry Fest weekend was very busy for our division. • Chalk Walk on Friday night had 25 entries. • 5K race on Saturday had 150 runners and 15 walkers. • Kids 1 Mile had 17 racers even with the rain. • Men's Softball Tournament had 16 teams. • Co -Ed Softball Tournament had 8 teams. • Men's Home Run Derby had 14 contestants. • Our tennis lesson program has had lower numbers this year compared to the previous years, but all lessons have been offered as scheduled. • The pre - school programs for June were cancelled due to low enrollment — they are operating in July and August with average size classes. The staff that were hired for those positions were able to assist with programs else were that had higher than anticipated numbers. • Supervised Playgrounds at Peter Thompson, Woodridge, and Hearthside have been very busy — all three sites have been equally busy. • Archery Camp was held the week of June 25 — there were 15 kids signed up for the class. This is a great program that we are able to offer at an affordable rate in our community. • June 28 was our Annual Fishing program at Hidden Valley Pond. We offered two times this year for people to come out and fish during the day and evening. We had about 500 people throughout the day come to learn about fish and try the sport. • On July 13 we celebrated the Grand Opening of the Highlands Park Splash Pad — although there was a severe thunderstorm about 150 people came out for the free ice cream. Current Projects /Programs • We are hosting the 3 rd Lair Summer Series Skateboard Competition on Friday, July 27 at 5:30pm at Hamlet Park. • On August 2, all of our park programs are heading to Hamlet Park for a Party in the Park, hosted by our park leaders. This is a free event open to the community. • Finishing out the last two week of summer are Adventure Camp and Summer Slam at Woodridge Park. • We are also finalizing our dates for fall and winter programming.
