SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS Memo from Director of Public Safety Craig Woolery dated 8 -29 -12 ® Power point presentation COUNCIL ACTION TAKEN: [ ❑ DENIED ❑ OTHER From: Director of Public Safety Craig Woolery Date: August 29, 2012 Subject: IMMEDIATE TRIAL STUDY Introduction In the spring of 2010, Cottage Grove EMS began participation in a nation -wide study which helped to advance understanding of treatment for patients experiencing heart attack - related symptoms. The study was concluded in July of 2011. Discussion Cottage Grove paramedics, under the direction of Dr. Ralph Frascone of Regions Hospital EMS, responded to emergency calls from patients with symptoms of a heart attack. Several east metro ambulance services also participated in the study representing the St. Paul area which was one of 13 communities nationwide that participated in an innovative national study supported by the NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute involving a glucose - insulin- potassium, "GIK ", solution for patients experiencing symptoms such as chest pains. Paramedics were found to be a key part of this study that has demonstrated that the severity of heart attacks can be reduced by the early administration of a simple solution of glucose - insulin - potassium. The study found that when started immediately in the home or on the way to the hospital — even before the diagnosis is completely established — GIK appeared to reduce the size of heart attacks and to reduce by half the risk of having a cardiac arrest or dying. Recommendation Regions EMS would like to recognize the City of Cottage Grove for its participation in this important national study. As an example, Regions hospital will have a patient from Cottage Grove who was enrolled in the study on May 10, 2011. The Cottage Grove EMS crew attending the patient was Firefighter /Paramedic Ben Mair, Paramedic Rob Watson, Fire Lieutenant Scott Smith, Firefighter /EMT Mike Gabrielli and Firefighter /EMT Blake Denherder.
