Subject: Sunnyhill Park Update
The City has been working towards the opening of Sunnyhill Park located within the Pine Cliff
neighborhood. Since the commission last reviewed this project in the spring, there has been some
changes to the project schedule based on unforeseen circumstances.
In July, the City began construction of the planned realignment of Ideal Avenue. This work was
originally scheduled for 2013 or later. The Commission may recall a two - phased approach to the
development of Sunnyhill Park based on this future road realignment. With Ideal Avenue being
realigned a year ahead of schedule, summer construction activity at Sunnyhill Park has been minimal
due to limited access to the site. Staff has also been hesitant to build the playground or other play
features in fear of attracting children to the park which adjacent to heavy construction activities.
However, work continues in that we still have been able to complete the picnic shelter, lay a portion of
the recreational trail, pour the concrete border for the playground and transplant some large maple
trees around the playground. Assuming road construction activity nears completion in September,
contractors should be able to access the park to erect the playground equipment and perform site
grading thus allowing the neighborhood to enjoy these new features. We would expect construction of
the basketball court, bocce ball courts and landscaping to take place in 2013.
The phase I and phase II plans are now beginning to coalesce. Phase II improvements will likely
happen over the fall of 2012 and through 2013. Substantial completion of the entire park is expected
by the end of 2013. However we do expect residents to have full access to the phase I portion of the
park no later than spring of 2013.
