Vogel City Historic Preservation Officer 27 December 2000 INTRODUCTION The Heritage Resources Inventory (HRI) is a carefully organized compilation of information on heritage resources that have been evaluated as significant, i.e., worthy of preservation and consideration in community planning. Prepared and maintained by the City Historic Preservation Officer (CHPO), the inventory profiles Cottage Grove's most important heritage resources and helps establish priorities for nominating buildings, sites, structures, objects, and districts to the City Register of Historic Sites and Landmarks. Since 1980, the city's heritage resources survey has identified more than three hundred historic properties. Of these, fifty have been included in the HRI on the basis of their significance in history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture. This report briefly summarizes the planning data on these historic properties, with special reference to their registration status. THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES The National Register of Historic Places, authorized under the Historic Sites Act of 1935 and expanded under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, was designed to be the authoritative guide used by government agencies and private citizens to identify significant historic resources. Properties are listed in the National Register through nominations by the State Historic Preservation Officers. Three properties in the City of Cottage Grove were listed in the National Register prior to the establishment of the city historic preservation program in 1981, and a fourth was placed on the Register in 1984 on the basis of work done by the Minnesota Historical Society in 1982. Two of the National Register properties — the Grey Cloud Lime Kiln and the John P. Furber House — are also listed in the City Register of Historic Sites and Landmarks. The National Register of Historic Places is maintained by the National Park Service, United States Depa.rtment of the Interior, in Washington, D.C. ❑ Mary and Cordenio Severance House (Cedarhurst), 6940 Keats Avenue.
