HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-11-12 PACKET 13.A.M Memo To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission From: Zac Dockter, Parks and Recreation Director Date: November 2012 Re: Update on Park Activities Below is an overview of Park activities that are complete, projects /programs we are working on, and upcoming projects /programs: COMPLETED PROJECTS /PROGRAMS • Routine park maintenance; mowing, ballfields, turf maintenance, cleaning, trash, etc. • Winterize splash pad • GPS property posts • Take down ballfield netting /windscreen • Hardwood Avenue landscaping • Fall fertilizing /aerating • Fall spraying • Highlands splash pad drainage correction • Concrete maintenance curbing /bench areas at Arbor Meadows and Old CG ballfields CURRENT PROJECTS /PROGRAMS • Aerating, fertilizing and overseeding ballfields • EAB /boulevard tree management • Sunnyhill park development • Landscape bed maintenance • Litter lifting of parks • Irrigation blow outs and repair • Winterizing buildings and facilities UPCOMING PROJECTS /PROGRAMS • Trim archery range shooting lanes • Install new park rules signage • Prepare hockey rinks • Tree trimming and dead tree removal • Remove ash trees in Nina's, North Ideal and Pine Tree Valley Parks • Hardwood Park clearing /grubbing • Woodridge tree removal from storm To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission From: Jordan Hirman Date: November, 2012 Re: Update on Ice Arena Division Activities Below is an overview of Ice Arena Activities that are complete, projects /programs we are working on, and upcoming projects /programs: COMPLETED PROJECTS /PROGRAMS • Maintenance: Cleaned rink boards, cleaned glass, and miscellaneous lighting replacement. • Worked with Washington County to schedule Sentence to Serve twice a month to come to the arena to work on cleaning projects. • Successfully hosted Squirt A Preview on November 3 rd • Hosted Halloween Open Skate with 64 participants. • Wrapping up Fall Learn to Skate with 132 participants. • Opened up Winter 2012/13 Skating Lessons. • Received CGHA's ice hours for 2012/13. • Advertising program installation of signs and payments. CURRENT PROJECTS /PROGRAMS • Maintenance: Finish hanging advertising in West rink. • Scheduling ice time for all remaining available ice hours. • Meeting with CGHA to improve ice scheduling for 2013/14. • Park Boys /Girls and East Ridge Boys hockey season. UPCOMING PROJECTS /PROGRAMS • Researching Max Enterprise for scheduling and POS. • Winter Learn to Skate registrations. • Turkey Tournament November 23rd -25tH • Preparing for upcoming High School Hockey Season. Please feel free to call or email with any questions or comments, 651.458.3404. Minnesota Recreation and Park Association Conference in Brainerd MN, in September. It was a great chance for all of us to learn about what other cities are offering and new trends the industry has to offer. • The Splash Pad officially closed for the year — we will begin taking rentals for the 2013 year as of January 1. • Staff offered activities for MEA Break on October 18 and 19 at Peter Thompson Park. Current Projects /Programs • Prepping the building and training staff for the school -year program at Woodlands Rec. Center. • The recommended Tobacco Free Policy will be presented to City Council on November 23, 2012. • Taking applications for 2012 -2013 Warming House staff — warming houses will open on December 26, 2012. • Beginning to gather information and photos for the Department's Annual Report. • The 5 th Annual Skate Night at Highlands will be on Friday, January 11, 2012. Quote of the month from MEA Break 6 year old boy: "Guess what I am going to be for Halloween, it starts with an R." Staff guesses everything we can think of that starts with the letter R. 6 year old boy: "No" 7 year old girl standing there listening, rolls her eyes at us: "Dahhh, aRmy guy" • Page 2
