Subject: Park Legacy Giving and Volunteer Park Ranger Programs
Introduction
Staff continually analyzes opportunities to engage the community in being active supporters of the
Parks and Recreation system. It's important that multiple streams for participation are provided so that
all interested residents may find an opportunity to give back in a way that also satisfies their particular
needs or desires. Two such programs for the Commission's review are the Parks and Recreation
Legacy Giving program and the Park Volunteer Ranger program.
Background
Although a giving program is currently in place, staff is recommending an update to the donation
brochure while changing the title to "The Cottage Grove Parks and Recreation Legacy Giving Program ".
The existing donation program has been in place since 2004 with minimal participation. Staff is
attempting to generate additional interest and participation in the program by providing new
opportunities and an improved marketing effort. We hope this will increase support of the city's Parks
and Recreation services. The support sought may come from both tangible and intangible sources.
The new marketing brochure is included in this report.
Additionally, staff is proposing a new volunteer program entitled "Volunteer Park Rangers ". The
Volunteer Park Rangers program would be designed to enhance the customer experience for all park
users by having additional service men /women monitoring city parks throughout the year. Volunteers
would help to assure that park and trail users are having safe and enjoyable experiences on a regular
basis. Park Rangers would also gather statistical data, document park /equipment usage patterns and
survey park users to gain insightful data to help in decision making and long -term planning.
A summary of the program including purpose, training and outcomes is attached with this report for
review.
Recommendation
Provide staff direction on implementation of the Park Legacy Giving and Park Volunteer Ranger
programs.
