Consider approving "The Shoppes at Cottage View" as the marketing name for the future
commercial area located on the site of the former Cottage View Drive -In and the directly
adjacent land guided to commercial uses.

RE: Naming of East Ravine /Cottage View Commercial Area
Introduction
The December 19, 2012 approval of the Walmart and City of Cottage Grove Development
Agreementhas created a situation that allows for more favorable marketing of the commercial
area made up of the former Cottage View Drive -In (9338 East Point Douglas Rd) and adjacent
land that is guided for future commercial uses (location map attached).The purpose of bringing
this item to the City Council is to ask for approval of a marketing name for this future commercial
area.
Background
Currently, the subject area is most readily referred to as Cottage View or Neighborhood 1 -South
within East Ravine (as referenced in the East Ravine Plan). While evaluating possible names,
staff considered references to the following:
• Historic family names of the area
• The adjacent regional park
• Natural features of the area
• Local landmarks of the area
• The sites previous land uses
After considering the advantages and disadvantages of various names, staff brought the item to
the Economic Development Authority in September to seek feedback on the following options:
• Shoppes at Cottage View
• Ravine Plaza
• Ravine View Center
• Cottage View Center
• Riverwood Center /Plaza
• Jamaica /Cottage View
Ultimately, the EDA recommended Shoppes at Cottage View, but said they could also possibly
support a name with "Ravine" in it, such as RavinePlaza. Staff believes the Shoppes at Cottage
View would be good choice due to the following reasons:
o The tendency already exists for individuals to call the subject area "Cottage View" when
referring to it.
o The reference to " Shoppes at..." is consistent with Shoppes at Almar Village in the East
Ravine development.

In anticipation of having a signed Development Agreement between the City and Walmart, as
well asWalmart closing on the propertythis spring, staff would like to prepare additional
marketing material that will be actively directed to developers. The City would likely benefit by
having the remaining commercial area comprehensively planned and constructed by one
developer. City staff intends to proactively ramp up marketing efforts and utilize opportunities
such as the upcoming ICSC (International Council of Shopping Center) Conference in the
spring, to assist the landowner and /or their broker in actively marketing the remaining
commercial land.
Recommendation
The EDA and City staff recommend that the future subject commercial area be marketed as "The
Shoppes at Cottage View ".
