City of Cottage Grove Environmental Displays Overview The following document covers: • Goals of the Environmental Displays • Participation /Recognition of Organizations • Three Main Banner Topic Elements • MPCA Alignment • Draft Creative Approach • Banner Hardware Options and Estimates Goals Development of an environmental display that achieves the following goals: • Conveys messages about recycling, water conservation, and benefits of rain gardens • Promotes a call to action • Promotes similar messages — factual and emotional -- to that of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency public education program regarding preserving and protecting the environment and follows a similar creative approach • Transportable to use in various locations (also taking weight and size into consideration • Ability to use the displays indoors and outdoors. The outdoor use would need to consider wind and rain, and the ability for the material and hardware to withstand elements. • Ability to use banners on a tabletop as well as on the ground • Common design elements to allow the ability to use the banners independently as well as a group • Banners are produced in an environmentally friendly manner • Development of an accompanying tablecloth for an 8 -ft. table that complements the displays The audience includes people of all ages, and in particular, the citizens and businesses of Cottage Grove. Participation /Recognition of Organizations The design should include the logos of the following entities: • City of Cottage Grove logo • Washington County logo Are there other organizations to consider? Three Main Banner Topics Elements Water Conservation Below are messages to convey regarding Water Conservation. Are there others to consider? • Benefits of irrigating responsibly • Watering Right (existing City program) — no waste • Acquifiers are not recharging or being replenished and this should be a concern and the reason for call to action. (We would want to cite what will happen if they dry up; what is the timeframe based on current use; potential cost to secure water.) • Create awareness of DNR and MS4 requirements • Main Message: Replenish the earth Rain Gardens (Stormwater) • Create awareness of Washington County Conservation District • Create awareness of benefits of rain gardens • Create awareness of funding programs and designs available to install rain gardens • Main Message: Replenish the Earth Recycling • Showcase facts regarding waste, pollution coupled with the benefits • Awareness of individual opportunities to recycle Are there other messages that should be considered for each of the above topics? MPCA Alignment The MPCA educational materials are shown below. The design and messaging will be similar in nature or aligned to the displays below. Below is the website location of these materials: http:/ /www.pca.state.mn.us /index.php? option= com_k2 &view = item &id =2177 Banners Our banners are b toettall. 3 or 4feet wide, and freestanding. They are lighlweight and collapse into a portable canvas bag. Defining the direction is critical to developing actual copy, selecting images and developing the layout. The creative direction should grab attention, be familiar, create a call to action, and resonate with audiences. This can happen through a variety of creative directions, such as: • Being comical • Using common or familiar phases with a play on words • Using Fear or fear of unknown to create a call to action • Using facts and reality to create awareness and a call to action • Using an emotional approach to create a call to action • Focusing on the benefits to help encourage people to take action Gaining the input from the Commission will help direct which creative direction to pursue. Note: The creative direction is very preliminary to just give an idea of the approach to the creative. Developing the copy, selecting images, and preparing the layout will occur once a preferred creative direction is selected. See next pages.
