Subject: Commission Work Plan
Introduction
In February of 2012, the Commission placed on file the work plan below. This plan gives staff a tool for guiding
future commission direction and meeting agendas. You'll note in red, projects the commission worked on the
past year that relate to the plan.
This report provides the opportunity for discussion or recommendations for amending the work plan. Or, if no
recommendations are made the plan will remain as is.
201212013 Parks Commission Work Plan
1. Study and emphasize creating access to the Mississippi River.
a. River Oaks Scenic Overlook
i. Natural Resources Mgmt Plan, preliminary clearing
b. Gateway North Open Space development
i. Natural Resources Mgmt Plan, restoration grant, significant restoration work completed
c. Grey Cloud island areas
2. Study and emphasize creation of additional aquatic recreational facilities.
a. Monitor splash pad usage and use results to study additional options
i. Splash pad report to commission including usage data and information
b. Work with community center task force and city council to continue pursuit of larger -scale
aquatic facilities as part of a community center or its own operation
i. Included an outdoor family aquatic center in fall 2012 referendum
3. Study, develop and master plan recreational trail opportunities and program
a. Continue working towards making Cottage Grove a bicycle friendly community.
i. Expanded trail system, reviewing bike park opportunity, installed bike racks at
community parks
b. Focus on marketing of the trail system (mapping, trail clubs, adopt -a- trail, etc.).
c. Seek continued expansion of the trail system to assure connectivity throughout community.
i. Installed trails at Pine Tree Pond, E Central Ravine and Kingston Parks
d. Incorporate fitness and educational interpretive signage along trails (mileage, calories burned,
walking benefits, etc.)
4. Aggressively pursue Hamlet Park development
a. Study project status /needs, then work cooperatively with city council to find a means to
complete the project.
i. Included expansion project as part of fall 2012 referendum
5. Connectivity in the community for both vehicle and non - motorized recreational use.
i. Expanded trail system and continuously seeking completion of additional missing trail or
sidewalk links
6. Long term, unique attractions to the community to make Cottage Grove a destination point — examples
include zoo, interactive farm, splash pad, GNOS, etc.
i. Splash pad opening summer of 2012
