HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-03-13 PACKET 06.1.Ilk JE, 40 r r TO: Environmental Commission FROM: Jennifer Levitt, City Engineer DATE: February 4, 2013 RE: Environmental Display As outlined in the Environmental Commission's work plan, one goal is to have a display created in time for use at the Strawberry Festival. At the January meeting, options were provided for the three - banner display. The three themes were recycling, water conserva- tion, and rain gardens. The consultant has continued to refine the themes as outlined in the attachment. The consultant, Dawn Williams with S.E.H., will be at the meeting to re- view the design themes and gain further insight into the panel designs before proceeding with the preliminary design of the banners. Please review the themes and come prepared to provide feedback on the themes, images, and desired look of the banners. Strawberry Festival is June 14 through 16, 2013. The Commission should start to plan how they would like to schedule the Commissioners to run the booth. Typically, the booths are set -up around 7:30 a.m. and close about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday the June 15. As part of the booth there would be a tent and a table with a matching table cloth that will go with the proposed banners. Currently, there are pencils, bracelets, reusable bags, and coloring books that can be give -a -way items from the booth. The Commission should agree on the desired type of handouts and give -a -way items so staff can review the feasibility of the requests in preparation for the event. Also this year there will be a Public Works Open House on September 19, 2013, which runs 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is another event at which the Commission may want to set up the educational booth. Included in this memo are: • The ranked responses from the Environmental Commission Members and other participants for the three banners -- Recycling, Water Conservation, and Rain Gardens -- and resulting averages (page 4) • Written comments provided on the surveys (pages 1 -2) • Additional headline options presented by three responders (page 2) • The preferred headlines based on an average rating of the responses (page 3) • Request for approval to proceed (page 3) Written Comments Overall the written comments were very insightful, and will help in the development of supporting copy on the banners. Recycling: Written Comments: D.Parr - These are some very clever ones on this list D. Thiede - Tie them in with saving money if possible J.McLoughlin - When you consider the targeted audience, I think you should focus on the curbside recvclables. I like the correlation between the shoe and the court, field or gym, but since you can't put tennis shoes in your curbside recycling bin, it may not help increase recycling. I think that most people donate shoes because it is easier than finding a place for recycling, but it would be nice to have supplemental information (Myers, etc.) available at the display with information on where you can take shoes. You could use any of the savings on the handout. Also — we have to recycle tires, and people generally have that taken care of when they get new tires, so again — probably not the targeted message. I think we really need to target increasing our curbside recycling, especially considering the state's new goals for recycling Water Conservation: Written Comments L.Bolstad - Have a picture of a kid fishing implies passing along a clean water future. Cute kid = sentimentality J.McLoughlin - The real target for water conservation is irrigation — that is where people will really see a difference in their pocketbook. I don't think that everyone will automatically relate to the lake reference, and I only know of a handful of people who are passionate enough about water conservation to really rely on rain barrels enough to not use a sprinkler. Rain barrels are for watering plants more than your lawn. Shorter showers won't give you the volume of water conservation that you want either. If residents reduce their irrigation, they will really see a difference in their water bill — and now that we have monthly water bills - they can see it even sooner. The other topics are worth having infonnation /flyers on, but statistics will help those issues more (how much water can you save by taking a 7 minute shower vs. a 10 minute shower?) Olson - Don't use "kill" on a banner L.Bolstad - Sprinkle less today, save money and our lakes tomorrow - more long teen consequences I like the one that I ranked #1. Unless someone takes on a major rain garden project, they may not see a huge difference in their water bill. I think of rain gardens more to help infiltrate property runoff and in relation to clean water. A good rain garden can be expensive to install, so people may not see them as a money saver. If you changed the rain garden reference to "Native Garden ", then my #2 and #4 are more feasible. Native gardens require very little water and do not require as much money to install. You can reduce turf area easily with gardens, and natives require less water. If you stick with a rain garden, I would encourage you to have information about the cost -share programs through the conservation districts. I would avoid using the word "kill" in relation to lawn. People generally do not want to kill their lawn, and the ones that do are not your focus group. You want to appeal to the people who like plush green lawn. I understand that the message is more likely — "let your lawn go dormant ", so I think kill is too harsh J.Burbank - More on environmental benefit versus cash benefit M.Pietruszewski - REALLY don't like the first one [crossed out] Additional Water Conservation Headlines Options: (mfrl5 /--LGY tL cut ) Buy a Pw Barrel 11oday Addltionai Comments: (Sating rainwate for rprfnider( X Lc .4.c.A.
