Property owners with addresses (house number, not street number) ending in even numbers (0,2,4,6,8) water only on even numbered dates. Property owners with addresses ending in an odd number (1,3,5,7,9) water only on odd numbered dates. No outdoor watering from noon to 4 p.m. even on your day to water. Watering during the heat of the day wastes water. This time restriction was adopted by the City Council in December 2012. Automatic sprinkling systems must be set to comply with both the odd/even and time-of-day schedule also. All property owners can water on the 31st day of the month. Watering limitations only apply to property served by City water and do not include kids playing with sprinklers or water slides. If you need to water newly planted grass or gardens more often you'll need a permit. Contact Public Works at 651-458-2808. Be a good neighbor City code requies that grass and weeds do not exceed a height of eight inches and that residential trash containers need to be stored out of site. Help keep your neighborhood and community beautiful by keeping your grass (and weeds) under eight inches and your trash cans out of sight. An Eye for Photography We want to see the best of Cottage Grove through your eyes. From people and places to celebrations and locations, we invite you to capture the beauty and spirit of this great community and enter your photographs into our 12th annual photo contest. Any resident can submit their favorite photos for a chance to win a$50 fist prize. There are six categories to choose from: • Black and White photographs • Celebrations or Events • H1StOY1C • Parks or Trails • People • Streetscapes buildings, places or things Winning photographs will be featured in the Cottage Grove Reports, on the City's website and other City publications. Green Lawn Tips Here are a few ways to care for your lawn and save some money at the same time. 1. Use free rain water. Invest in a rain sensor if your sprinkler is on a timer. That way it won't run in the middle of the rain. 2. Water the turf, not the sidewalk. When setting up your sprinkler make sure you're not watering your driveway, sidewalk or the road. Try a soaker hose for watering your gardens. 3. Too much of a good thing. Grass roots can only absorb an inch of water at a time. To keep from over-watering, place an empty tuna can in an unobtrusive spot on your lawn before turning on the sprinkler. When the can is full, the grass has had enough water. When the water in the can evaporates, it is time to water again. 4. Standing tall. Turf grass roots are generally as long as the above ground City Council Meetings. They held the first and thid Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall. An open forum is held at 7:15 p.m. where residents may speak on topics not included on the evenings agenda. Can't make a meeting? The taller the grass, the better it can absorb water. Plus taller grass makes it harder for weeds to grow. When mowing, set the cut height 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches to avoid scorching. 5. A secret weapon. The soil beneath many residential lawns is highly compacted, almost like rock, meaning it can only absorb small amounts of water. Rent a lawn aerator from a local garden supply or home improvement store to reduce soil compaction and improve infiltration in your lawn. If you are laying new sod, fist till the soil deeply to encourage good root growth. Remember as you embark on your journey toward a greener lawn that our water supplies are not endless. By using a little common sense, you can achieve the lawn of your dreams without draining your local aquifer or your wallet. A WI1111111g StOYy. Retail Development in the City Have you ever wondered how the City pursues future retailers for Cottage Grove? This is done in a number of proactive ways, such as contacting retailers directly, working with individuals that are considering starting a business and taking part in events that allow the City to introduce Cottage Grove and explain why it's a good place to consider locating a business. This year Mayor Myron Bailey and Economic Development Director Danette Parr attended the ICSC Conference and held meetings with more than 24 retailers and developers. The conference allowed for two days of meetings with retailers and developers to share a concept plan of the future Shoppes at Cottage View (the site of the former Cottage View Drive-In). One such opportunity is the annual ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) Conference. Over the last four years, the City has sent representatives from the City Council, Economic Development Authority and staff to meet with prospective retailers. These desired retailers are established based on citizen input (such as community surveys), as well as an understanding of goods and services that are currently lacking in the community. In addition to talking about new land for commercial development, it also allowed for conversations about existing vacancies. With the improved economic climate, there was a great deal of interest expressed and future tours are planned for interested developers and retailers.
