HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-09-04 PACKET 04.B.City of Cottage Grove , Minnesota To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Zac Dockter, Parks and Recreation Director Date: 8/13/13 Subject: East Ridge Grove Neighborhood Park Naming Introduction The City is currently master planning for the neighborhood park to be located in the East Ridge Grove housing development. As part of the master planning process, identifying a park name is necessary. Background In August, the Parks Commission completed step five of the city's Park Naming Policy. Step five requires the Commission to debate the merits of a narrowed list of names from the original list of 41 (Appendix A) and provide a final recommendation to the City Council. The name "Cedarhurst Park" was chosen unanimously by the Commission based on the following supporting information: Cedarhurst Meadows Park— Cedarhurst Meadows combines both historical and landscape features of the area. "CedarhursY' reflect the parks vicinity to the historical Cedarhurst Mansion just east of the site. "Meadows" refers to the fact that pre-settlement vegetation of the area was dominated by upland prairie. In addition, this future park will be adjacent to the watershed district property and open space which will be restored to native prairie/meadow. During step six of the Park Naming Policy, the City Council is to review the Commission's recommendation and either approve or deny the park name. Should the recommendation be denied, the issue will be sent back to the Commission to start anew. Recommendation Consider approving the name "Cedarhurst Meadows Park" for the neighborhood park located in the East Ridge Grove housing development. Appendix A 1. Ravine Meadows Park 2.
