Introduction
The purpose of this memorandum is to request the approval of Rick Redenius from
probationary to regular status for the position of Deputy Director of Public Safety/ Fire
Services Chief effective upon his anniversary date of November 26, 2012.
Background
Rick Redenius has a long history with the City of Cottage Grove. From October 27,
1987 to June 15, 1992 Chief Redenius served with the Cottage Grove Fire Department.
After leaving for a short period of time Chief Redenius returned to the Fire department
on September 8, 1994, moving up the ranks to the position of Deputy Chief in a part
time status.
On September 4, 2012 Rick was assigned as the interim Fire Chief. After a very
competitive testing process, Rick was selected as the top candidate and was appointed
on November 26, 2012.
Discussion
During the past year Chief Redenius has perFormed in an exemplary manner in his role
as Deputy Director of Public Safety/Fire Services Chief. Rick is deeply committed to the
Public Safety Department and to the City. Rick continues to be progressive and
encourages employee feedback and engagement; he expects a high standard of
performance with his employees.
The past year has brought about significant change with the transition to a fire based
emergency medical service. Chief Redenius has performed in an exemplary manner in
all aspects of his position as Fire Chief and Emergency Manager for the city.
Recommendation
Chief Redenius is a valued member of the Public Safety Leadership Team and it is
without hesitation I recommend his appointment as Deputy Director of Public Safety/
