HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation UpdateMemo To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission From: Molly Pietruszewski, Recreation Supervisor Date: December 9, 2013 Re: Recreation Division Update: August-November Below is an overview of past and current Recreation activities and events since August. Please feel free to call or email with any questions or comments, 651-458-3404. Past Projects/Programs - August - Our two biggest weeks of the summer are Adventure Camp (Woodridge Park) and Summer Slam (moved to Hamlet Park due to extreme heat). Both of these programs require all of our staff to work; coordinating science experiments, cooking lunch, tie dying shirts, and running games. - Home Alone; a class that provides instructions on how to deal with almost any situation while youth are home alone. We go through a variety worksheets, role play, situations to get kids and adults thinking about the “what if’s”. “What if we use a garage code to get in the house and the power goes out during the day?” - September - Recreation staff coordinated vendors, concessions, and logistics for the Public Works Open House which had over 1,200 people attend. - Woodlands Rec. Center located in the Woodland Townhomes behind the Park Grove Library is owned by the Wash. Co. HRA but the spaced is leased by the City. The Wash. Co. HRA reimburses the recreation department to coordinate an after-school program along with some supplies. We remodeled the space this fall to fix a few things up; new paint, paneling on the walls, reinforced deteriorating windows, etc. - Minnesota Recreation and Park Association held its annual conference which both Mark Schneider and I attended to learn more out trends and techniques in the field of recreation. - Our fall session of Tot Spot began with twelve 3-5 year olds at Pinetree Valley Park on Fridays; this park is a great location for us to learn and play outside in the park. - October - All recreation staff along with Freckles supported the Safe Route to School campaign that took place with students walking from Kingston Park to Grey Cloud Elementary. - MEA Break activities took place at Peter Thompson Park in October with games, outside activities, movies, and crafts. - Lacrosse is a growing sport in Minnesota and Cottage Grove is following that trend. All parents, coach, and mangers were invited to a meeting to discuss what the sport will look like over the next five years including fields, seasons, possibly switching to an association, equipment, and expanded teams. Current Projects/Programs - Completing the Winter/Spring 2014 brochure that will be mailed the week of December 23. - Reviewing the “fine print” on our registration forms and finalizing the 2014 Supervised Playground brochure. - Organizing teams and schedules for the Men’s Hockey League. - Coordinating the Tree Lighting Ceremony, Holiday Lights Competition and the Businesses that Give Back to celebrate the holiday season. - Recycling presentations to the pre-k classes at Grey Cloud Elementary. - Warming House staff hiring and training – the buildings and rinks will open December 26.
