DISCUSSION This discussion took place during the 2014 budget discussions as a means to better respond to emergencies that are off-road and which may take place on over 55 miles of trail systems in our city year round. One unit will be placed at Fire Station 2 and the other at Station 1 or 4. The purchase of these units will increase our mobility and access onto the city trail systems and increase our efficiency in fighting grass fires along the railroad tracks when they occur. The future maintenance costs associated to these units are going to be much less than purchasing another full-size pickup. Several cities in the county, Forest Lake, Scandia, and Lake Elmo have units similar to what we are proposing and each of the chief's highly recommend the use of this type of apparatus for quick and mobile response to local trail systems and working fires along the railroad tracks. We have attempted to gain these units via grant programs two (2) times in the past but we have been unsuccessful. In addition to grant attempts we were told that these types of vehicles are generally not leased or rented because of the particular use the city has intended for it. It was also learned that if a lease was in place and a long term one was wanted, the cost of the lease may run higher than purchasing the units out right if the unit were kept for a significant amount of time. These units are replacing a 1989 Chevrolet crew cab pickup. The authorized cost for the truck is budgeted for $57,000 in 2014. The quoted prices for the equipment is $50,527.00 with an anticipated setup cost of both units with lighting and some graphics to be $5,000.00 or less. This will bring the cost of this replacement under budget. The following graph represents the last 12 years of maintenance costs for the existing grass rig. Maintenance costs are expected to increase and by the end of 2014 reaching an estimated $1,400. The estimated resale value of the vehicle is $1,500. INC. Attachments: Email.pdf Here is the quote. Keep in mind it is a metal box that would need have some type of barrier between the water tank and the box on the utv to prevent rusting. Also when we have the tank in the unit it defeats the purpose of the Crew cab since the back seat would have to be folded down to allow enough space for the tank to fit into the back of the utv.
