These funds are made available through the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP), an integral part of MN health reform law, which strives to help Minnesotans lead longer, healthier lives by preventing chronic disease factors and physical inactivity. Staff is asking for authorization from the City Council to apply for this grant. Staff has identified two opportunities for which the grant may be affective. Because more research is being done on the criteria of the grant program, the projects have not yet been prioritized. The projects currently identified are below. Only one will be applied for in the grant. 1. New water fountain and water bottle filling station at Hamlet Park. This project would also include an educational sign on the facts/benefits of water versus unhealthier options and while also including some positive messaging regarding use of the parks and recreation system to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle. 2. Install two paddleboats at Hidden Valley pond. These paddleboats would be latched to the fishing pier and be available "at-will" to the general public. This new feature would provide yet another option to residents and visitors of Cottage Grove to recreate in our park system. The maximum funding request is $4,999. It is expected that either of these projects will reach near that maximum dollar value. The grant does not require any additional match from the City of Cottage Grove. . Staff Recommendation Authorize staff to apply for the Active Living in the Community Partner Project grant in an amount not to exceed $4,999.
