We are coming to the end of our first step: project concept. With the guidance and direction from Flagship - Recreation and Landscape Structures an accessible 21,000 square foot playground has been designed for Woodridge Park. This concept design is everyone's dream park, but for a child who stumbles on woodchips, a grandparent who can't climb steps, a toddler who wants to watch from a secure dome, or an adult who can't be in the sun — this park is a dream come true. Careful consideration has gone in to every aspect of this design. Step two: identify funding sources. Now we need to bring the dream to Woodridge Park. Although we are not 100% done with the design we have a rough estimate of what the numbers are going to be. Our preliminary budget came in at $842,000. With modifications and eliminations our budget goal will be closer to $700,000. The city currently has $350,000 in the CIP budget, which leaves us $350,000 to fundraise. The objective is to raise the remaining $350,000 in grants and donations from local businesses, citizens, local and national foundations and possible fundraising events. The Woodridge Park Inclusive Playground will be an economic engine and a destination park for Cottage Grove. Although we do not have a final price or design there are grants and donations that our project qualifies for that are due before the end of the calendar year and more due after the new year. The task force is eager to begin our fundraising efforts to bring this dream playground to Woodridge Park in 2016; that allows us one year to get the job done. The Cottage Grove Recreation Department is requesting permission to apply for grants and donations which have zero monetary requirements of the city to be put toward the Woodridge Park Inclusive Playground. Any grants and donations that have requirements such as "matching grants" would be brought to council on an "as needed basis". All grants and donations received would be brought to council for acceptance.
