HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-01-06 MINUTES Minutes City of Cottage Grove Arts Commission Meeting December 2, 2014 Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a Cottage Grove Arts Commission Meeting was held on December 2, 2014. CALL TO ORDER Meeting called to order by Chairman Vogel at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Members Present: Justin Atkinson, Meg Bjorkman, Andrea Cloutier, Cassie Klinga, LeRoy Johannsen, Lew Vogel, Members Absent: Sarah Kostick, Bill Larsen, Kathleen Kullman Others Present: Zac Dockter, Parks and Recreation Director Justin Olsen, Councilman Approval of Agenda Motion to approve agenda by Commissioner Bjorkman, seconded by Commissioner Klinga. Motion approved. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve October 7, 2014 minutes by Commissioner Atkinson, seconded by Commissioner Bjorkman. Motion approved Open Forum None Presentations None Action Items Films in 5 Festival The Festival is starting to come together, thanks to Commissioner Atkinson. Information has been released to the public by the Communications Coordinator. It has gone out on Art Beat Facebook Page, the City’s Facebook page and the City’s website along with other avenues. Poster of choice is in the packet for review. Commissioner Atkinson spoke on up to date information on Fest. He started promoting the event on October 29. He has encouraged city staff to share on their Facebook pages. He reached out to other Cities to share on Twitter, Community Arts Center sent out email, Newport and St. Paul Park posted it on their City’s website. Commissioner Atkinson has had an interview with the Star and Tribune, South Washington Co. Bulletin, and the Woodbury Bulletin. He has an interview on WACG Radio coming up to promote it. Commissioner Atkinson thanked Communication Coordinator Sharon Madsen for all her assistance in promoting the event in Cottage Grove. Commissioner Bjorkman’s son did a fantastic job on the poster. Thanks to him. The submission deadline is January 2nd, screening of the films will be January 24th from 12-4pm at Park High School. The Holiday train is Wednesday, December 10th. Arts Commission can give a special announcement at that time about Film Festival. The poster needs to be updated with time of the event, Zac will then have posters printed up for Commissioners to pick up and distribute. Fall Art Exhibit This item was tabled from the October 7th meeting as Commissioner Kostick was not at in attendance. She is not here this evening either so it will be tabled to next meeting. Motion to table by Commissioner Bjorkman, Commissioner Larsen seconded. All were in favor. Facility Tours Tabled from last meeting. Some facilities to tour are Park High School Auditorium, Park Grove Library, and the Municipal Pool Building. It was decided to wait until after the Film Fest to set this up. Zac will bring back in the spring. Strawberry Fest Art Show Commissioner Vogel recently attended a Strawberry Fest meeting regarding having an Art Show with Strawberry Fest. They were happy to have us come to them, they would like to do this. They are always looking for other things to be brought to Strawberry Fest. Commissioner Vogel looked at Edina, Uptown, Afton, and Eagan Art Shows to compare what fees were being charged and what amenities they have had. Arts Opportunity Promotion Zac talked about Art Beat Facebook page and the items that are currently on it. There are 148 likes on the Art Beat Facebook site. How do we get that number up? Something to think about. Presentation of Information Strawberry Fest Logo Competition Strawberry Fest is looking for submissions for their logo competition. They are taking submissions from the general public. Deadline is December 15th. Action Updates None Donation Acknowledgements None Staff Reports and Educational Material None Commission Comments Commissioner Atkinson stated the Arts Commission will be accepting submissions until January 2nd for the Films in 5 Festival. For more information, check out the City’s website at www.cottage-grove. org. Screening of the submitted films will take place at Park High School Saturday, January 24th from 12-4 pm. Stop by and watch some films. We will also be giving out gift certificates to local businesses to the top 3 films. It is only $5 to submit, and he wants to encourage everyone that enjoys film making to share your art with us and the community. Commissioner Klinga told about Park High School touring the Elementary Schools and doing two shows at Park’s Auditorium of The Mitten and Katie and the Big Snow. Two children shows, 15 minutes each. Council Comments Councilman Olsen did some background work on fundraising opportunities for the commission. The local Target store offers grants for arts in the community. Gets them involved in what we’re doing, offer cash incentives. Bush Foundation offers art grants and has some contacts that can help us. Talk more after holidays about the grant applications. To get the word out, increase viewership, maybe give a certificate for being the 500th or 1000th person to like a page. Councilman Olsen will go to the mayor for gift card ideas for the Festival, maybe businesses could donate? Adjournment Motion to adjourn by Commissioner Bjorkman, seconded by Commissioner Klinga.
