HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998.02.10 EDA MINUTES-APPROVED CITY OF COTTAGE GROVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY MINUTES February 10, 1998 Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the Economic Development Authority was held at City Hall, 7516 80th Street South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota on the 10th day of February, 1998. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:30 am by Mayor Denzer. ROLL CALL • Members Present: Jack Denzer, Jim Wolcott, Jerry Faletti, Glen Kleven, Gerard Weingartner Members Absent: Donna Boehm, Bill Buth, Fred Luden Others Present: Kirstin Baroness, Economic Development Director Ryan Schroeder, City Administrator Neil Belscamper, Economic Development Secretary APPROVAL OF MINUTES Kleven moved to approve the January 13, 1998 Minutes. Weingartner seconded. Motion carried unanimously. REVIEW ANNUAL REPORT EDA members made no revisions to the draft annual report. MARKETING MATERIALS Barsness outlined marketing options, which include running an ad in the Real Estate Journal, an industrial park brochure, in addition to a direct mailing (postcards). She said she had been in contact with two firms—Gretta Wedell and Stude-Becker—regarding different concepts. Barsness requested input on the idea, and discussed ways of reducing costs for some of the professional services with EDA member. • Economic Development Authority- Minutes February 10, 1998 Page 2 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE Barsness stated that the wastewater treatment bill was dead, and that TIF legislation was slated for the House and Senate. Schroeder said that he and Denzer had previously met with Met Council representatives to outline the City's position on the treatment plant. Barsness noted that a bill authored by Karen Clark on corporate subsidies is presently in the works, and that it would penalize municipalities for raiding businesses from other municipalities. PROJECT UPDATES Barsness said Courtesy Car Rental is interested in moving from Newport, and that a purchase agreement has already been signed for the old ABC Rental site. Barsness elaborated that she had suggested alternate locations for the business that would not involve rezoning. Kleven raised several concems over locating the business at the old ABC Rental site. Barsness said a manufacturer is looking to build a 380,000 sq. ft. facility, employing 200- plus employees, and that the City would be active in recruiting them to the area. • Finally, Barsness remarked that the pharmaceutical distribution firm is currently negotiating to locate in Hudson Wisconsin, where they would receive considerable incentives. APPOINT DONNA BOEHM TO EDA Wolcott moved to approve the appointment of Donna Boehm to the EDA. Weingartner seconded. Motion carried unanimously. MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS ITEMS. Barsness commented on the progress of planning the Annual Business Appreciation Breakfast, which includes compiling and updating mailing lists. Over 400 invitations are expected to be sent, and Barsness said over 100 people are expected to attend. At the breakfast a plaque will be presented to 3M for their 50th anniversary. Wolcott detailed the upcoming construction of Hardwood Avenue, which will free up more commercial area. Kleven commented that the Planning Commission is working on the City's Comprehensive Plan. One thing he suggested the City should look at is the acquisition of some property in the area of Keats Avenue and Highway 61. Other EDA members also felt the idea should be considered. ADJOURN Kleven moved to adjourn. Wolcott seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
