Nominations for the 2016 Sustainable City Award were due by March 1, 2016. This is the third year for the Sustainable City Award, which received nominations in two categories: Residential and Large Organization. Ms. Holtmeyer was nominated for the Residential 2016 Sustainable City Award for her project, Solar Panel Installation. This past year, Ms. Holtmeyer installed an 8.4kW solar PV array on her garage roof, and since then, her panels have produced more electricity than she has used, producing 4.72MWh versus consuming 4.01 MWh. The District 833 Elementary Schools and Middle School in Cottage Grove were nominated for their work in waste reduction, composting, and recycling through their program titled District 833 Carton Recycling and Best Practices. By working together, Washington County Department of Public Health & Environment representatives, District 833 staff and employees, and District 833 students grew the program to include all elementary schools in the district. District 833 Carton Recycling and Best Practices achieved its goal of beginning to recycle milk cartons while in- creasing the amount of recyclables collected from classrooms, hallways, and office areas and decreasing the amount of recyclables in the trash. The nomination forms received for both Ms. Holtmeyer and South Washington County Schools are attached. Recommendation The Environmental Commission recommends that the City Council: • Award the Residential 2016 Sustainable City Award to Ms. Sherry Holtmeyer • Award the Large Organization 2016 Sustainable City Award to South Washington County Schools: o Cottage Grove Elementary o Cottage Grove Middle School o Armstrong Elementary o Crestview/Nuevas Fronteras Elementary o Hillside Elementary o Grey Cloud Elementary o Pine Hill Elementary
