Cottage J Grove ��er� Pride and Qro�P�rity Me�t Clt�/ COUI'1CII CONSENTAGENDA Acfion Request Form �'G' Meeting Date 5/4/2016 Department Public Safety Title of Request National Police Week Proclamation Staff Recommendation Adopt Resolution 2016-085 proclaiming Sunday, May 15, 2016 as Police Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 15 - May 21, 2016 as National Police Week ATTACH MENTS: Description Type Upload Date Adopt Resolution Proclaiming National Police Week Resolution 4/27/2016 2016 RESOLUTION NO. 2016-[Resolution Number] PROCLAIMING NATIONAL POLICE WEEK MAY 15 THROUGH 21, 2016 AND PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY MAY 15, 2016 WHEREAS, there are over approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Cottage Grove Police Department, and WHEREAS, some 60,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting in approximately 16,000 injuries, and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, nearly 21,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, and WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C, and WHEREAS, this year, 1 Minnesota fallen officer's name, Steven Sandberg, from the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office, will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial from 2015. In addition to the national number of 123 officers who died in 2015, and WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be honored during National Police Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund 28th Annual Candlelight Vigil, in Washington D.C., on the evening of Friday, May 13, 2016, and th WHEREAS, May 15 is designated as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen and their families, and WHEREAS, the first recognition of Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day was signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. It was resolved in Congress that May 15th be designated Police Officers Memorial Day and the week in which falls designated as Police Week.The purpose of Peace Officers Memorial Day is to honor the police officer at all levels of government who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. Staff from Cottage Grove's Police Department will attend the Peace Officers Memorial service held at the Minnesota Peace Officer's Memorial in St. Paul, MN on Sunday, May 15th, 2016. NOW,THEREFORE, I, Myron Bailey, Mayor of the City of Cottage Grove, do hereby proclaim the week of May 15-21, 2016, as National Police Week, and Sunday, May 15, 2016, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day in the City of Cottage Grove, and urge Cottage Grove residents and civic organizations to salute our dedicated law enforcement officers in our community and in communities across the nation.
