Dear Residents of Cottage Grove:
On September 17, 1969, the Cottage Grove Village Council passed an
ordinance adopting the Washington County uniform street naming and
numbering system. Most of the streets and roads in Cottage Grove will be
renamed by March 17, 1970 to conform with the new system. Individual
house numbers will also be changed.
Your individual address according to the new system is:
Cottage Grove, Minnesota 55016
This brochure has been prepared to help us make the change with a mini-
mum of inconvenience. We have tried to explain how the system works
so that our citizens, as well as strangers and visitors can locate any particular
address without difficulty. We have also outlined all the steps that each of
us must take to accomplish the change.
While there may be some inconvenience for a short time, it is our hope that
all persons will cooperate in a manner that will assure a speedy change and
thus, minimize the temporary inconveniences that may be involved.
Sincerely,
Cottage Grove Village Council

HOUSE NUMBERS
1. You must install four inch reflectorized numerals on the principal building of urban property
or at the drive in rural areas. These numerals may be purchased at most hardware stores.
This must be done before April 15, 1970.
As a public service, the Cottage Grove Jaycees will be selling house numbers door to door.
They will have with them a list showing the new addresses. The numerals will conform to the
code. They will canvass the Grove -Estates area between February 21 and March 8. The Jaycees
will also have a booth in the Cottage Grove Shopping Center Mall on Friday evenings and
Saturdays during this period.
DRIVERS LICENSES
2. Drivers licenses must be changed to show the new addresses. The state of Minnesota charges
$.50 for this service. Another $.50 is normally charged for notary public service. The Cottage
Grove Mrs. Jaycees will be establishing a booth to provide this service in the Cottage Grove
Shopping Center Mall. Times will be announced in the local newspapers and on the Jaycee
bulletin board.
Notary service will also be provided at the Cottage Grove Village Hall at no cost, during normal
office hours. The state transfer fee ($.50) must still be charged, however.

sary to notify them.

(Insert new address) .11
The Post Office Department will continue to deliver mail carrying the old address for two years.
This should be ample time to notify all your correspondents.
Don't forget to change your credit card addresses also.
LEGAL DOCUMENTS
6. It will not be necessary to change the deeds for your homes and property, since they are not
recorded by address. Other legal documents shquld be checked to see if legality is based on

in writing within ten days of any address change.
HUNTING AND FISHING LICENSES

new address when you purchase a new license.
How Does The New Street Naming And
Numbering System Work?
1. The point of origin is the State Capitol Building and Highway No. 12.
2. A basic grid pattern has been laid out. North-South streets are named "Avenues" and East-
West streets are named "Streets". All avenues start with letters and run in alphabetical sequence
East from the State Capitol. The first letter of each avenue name changes with each mile. For
example, the Western most avenue existing in Cottage Grove is Glenbrook (previously Magnolia)
and the Eastern most avenue is Inwood (previously Eliot).
All streets run in numerical sequence South from Highway No. 12. The first digit of each street
name changes with each mile. For example, the Northern most street in Cottage Grove would
be 60th Street (6 miles South of U.S. 12). Our main East-West street will be 80th Street South.
(previously 14th Avenue).
3. The numbering system is based on 1000 numbers to a mile. For example, if a person lived on
Ideal Avenue South, just South of 80th Street South, his address could be 8024 Ideal Avenue
South. His house would be 8 miles South of Hudson Road and 8 miles East of the State Capitol.
4. Streets not running East-West or North-South have been assigned special names as follows:
a. Streets running NE to SW are called Boulevards.
b. Streets running NW to SE are called Roads.
c. Meandering streets, cul-de-sacs, and other miscellaneous streets are named in accordance
with the map enclosed.
5. State Highways, Freeways, and County Roads have been assigned a name according to the
system, but the route marker will remain after the new street signs are installed.
RESIDENTS WHO HAVE QUESTIONS ON PROCEDURES AND CHANGES MAY GET
ASSISTANCE FROM THE MRS. JAYCEES BY CALLING 459-9209 OR 459-4070 OR THE
VILLAGE OFFICE 459-5535.
REMEMBER, THE STREET SIGNS WILL BE UP BY MARCH 15th, 1970 AND YOUR NEW
HOUSE NUMBERS MUST BE INSTALLED BY APRIL 15th, 1970.
