Subject: INTRODUCTION OF NEW K9 GUNNAR AND HANDLER NILS
TORNING
We are proud to introduce our newest addition to the Cottage Grove Police Department,
K9 Gunnar and his handler Officer Nils Torning. K9 Gunnar is the city's fourth K9,
following in the steps of recently retired K9 Blitz.
K9 Gunnar is a Belgian Malinois born in Poland; specially bred and trained for police
service work. Officer Torning first met his new partner Gunnar in January. The training
started a few weeks later in February giving Gunnar a chance to get acclimated to life in
Minnesota.
On May 26, 2016, Gunnar and his handler Officer Torning, successfully completed the
12 week training program through the St. Paul Police Department. St. Paul Police held
the graduation ceremony at the Timothy J. Jones Canine Training Facility. The
ceremony was well attended and it was great to see all the support from the
departments and families. Officer Torning and Gunnar started on patrol June 1, 2016.
During the academy, Nils and his partner Gunnar, were trained in searches and
apprehension. This fall, they will attend training in narcotics.
As with our previous K9, there has been tremendous community support. A special
thank you to the Cottage Grove Public Safety Board for their fund raising efforts in
support of the K9 program. The Public Safety Board's fund raising paid for the majority
of this K9 program.
In 2013, the Public Safety Board (formerly known as the CG Crime Prevention Board)
donated $19,362.63 towards the city's future K9 program needs. In 2015 $2962.63 was
used to set up the K9 squad.
In the 2016 budget, $16,400.00 in donated funds were used for the purchase and
training of K9 Gunnar.
K-9 purchase: $8,750
K-9 Certification: $4,500
Kennel/Fence/Slab: $2,500
Initial Equipment: $650
Congratulations to Officer Nils Torning and his K9 partner Gunnar!
